Title: help with manualy disengaging the locking gas cap?
Post by: dieseldubber on January 27, 2008, 06:26:05 pm: Hi there. due to my water woes with the electrical system and the power locks not functioning, I am unable to open the gas tank flap to refuel. Is there a way to unlock it manualy from inside the trunk? I would just figure it out myself but the car is not with me, its with my girlfriend in Victoria. Thanks, I know this should be an easy one.

Post by: MaxHedrm on January 27, 2008, 07:24:55 pm: There should be a tag you can pull on. On my MK3 GTI I think it was sort of velcroed to the wall of the cargo area.

Post by: MikkiJayne on January 29, 2008, 01:25:30 pm: The mkII uses a vacuum actuator to lock the filler flap (plus everything else). There is no manual release, but...

If you look behind the carpet in the trunk above the wheel well you can see the actuator for the filler flap. You may be able to operate it manually if you can reach the rod on the end of it. It not it's held in with two pozi screws - if you remove those you can move the actuator just enough to release the filler flap, although you may need someone else to open the flap while you move the actuator.

Post by: mtnbob on January 31, 2008, 01:54:19 pm: you know many of them are manual open. mine had a small edge that you pull on to open. it wasn't readily apparent to me. I was looking around for the fuel door release for an hour before i figured it out :roll:

Post by: BlackTieTD on February 01, 2008, 07:46:03 am: go at it from the back as suggested and try to manually release it either by way of some sort of manual mechanism you might find back there, or by messing with the vacuum lines. i don't know how that vacuum crap works and i don't want to know but if you either eliminate the vacuum (pull off the hose) or add a vacuum (use a hand pump or another running VW that makes vacuum) it should operate as intended.

Post by: dieseldubber on February 02, 2008, 09:20:17 pm: ok thanks everyone. I am happy that people on this site are so helpful and unpretentious. It is really really nice. My girlfriend took it to the dealership in Vic. and they opened it up for $37.00. If I was there I would have done it but hey, she's happy and driving it around now. Damn she looks good in that thing too! Now I'm look forward to tackling the real problem of the short somewhere that caused this in the first place. Actually not really.
