Title: 36mm oil pump

Is my source wrong ,or did VW put the 36mm oil pump in hydrolic heads?I cant figure out what needs to be measured.Ive searched some threads with no success.

They came in later models as stock IIRC.  Forgot the year they started.

I believe the measurement referred to is the width of the pump gears.  I base this on a quote from SAE paper # 820441 posted on 4crawler.com that mentions an increase in oil pump capacity by increasing the gear width from 26 to 30 mm.  In a gear type pump, the only way to increase flow without changing gear diameter is by increasing the width of the gear.

Just wondering ,because i have a mechanic thats worked on these engines for years,and he swares i should have a mechanical head.I dont though.It would make sense to me that VW used the 36mm in hyd. heads,but then again i know nothing. :oops: Ive got an 85 so i imagine VW wanted to "use them up",before going hyd.

Yes VW did switch to hydraulic heads part way through the 86 production year. You probably don't have an original engine in your car.
The bentley shows how to check the oil pump for wear, I'd do that before assuming that the pump is junk

I need the 36 to supply the turbo,thats not suspose to be there. 8) The 30mm is fine im just upgrading :lol:
