Title: am i nuts? or is my car just really effecient
Post by: RabbitJockey on January 24, 2008, 09:50:58 pm
so i took my auto diesel out for a test run to see how it would as far as mpg if i just took it easy.  so i went and filled it up to the very top and went and drove it 19.2 miles about half country and half highway, in the country i didn't go above 35 and on the highway i didn't go above 50 a couple spurts of 55 how ever.  there was some starting and stopping in the country and a few lights when getting on and off the highway... no real waiting though.  so i went and filled up again and actually over flowed it a bit, i put in like a third of a gallon, needless to say i ended up with like 56 some mpg.  now i did drive rather slow but honestly 56 mpg with the very low geared automatic, thats crazy.  normally i get 35-40, i don't drive slow normally though.  i'm gonna try and drive slow during my normal routine for a week or so and then see how my economy is, i figure it will go down some because of warm up time and the amount of time i sit in traffic, but still i got over 56 mpg unless i did something wrong, but i did fill up at the same place and same pump

and to make sure my odometer as right i just checked my path on google maps and it's exactly 9.6, which multiplied by 2 is 19.2.  perhaps afterwork tomorrow i will fill up and see then, on the same pump again.  work is a much further drive

That is what I need. As of today, dino diesel in the UK is $8.08 a US gallon, just to cheer you up. Why is diesel tax evasion a national sport over here, I wonder?
Best I've had with the SB engined GTD is 50mpg imperial, so you are doing well. Some rebuilt DNO274's I will be fitting soon, so that should keep some cash away from those that do not deserve it. Keep up the good work! :)

Sounds great! One word of warning - it's very difficult (i.e. nearly impossible) to get an accurate mileage estimate on that short of a distance. Fill the tank fully, vent it, get it right to the top, run it nearly dry, and fill it again, then calculate your mileage again. With that, it'll be a much more accurate number - and on 500+ miles, a decimal place isn't going to be as significant or anything.

You're certainly not nuts, and it sounds like your car is treating you very well as far as efficiency goes!

yeah this time i had almost 40 miles on my tank because i drove all the way to work and back in normal rush traffic, and i got 58mpg this time it didn't splash at all, how ever i did one of those diesel nuts in a mb td start a diesel convo with me haha.  i also had forgotten to reset my tripometer so i had like 36 miles instead of 38 or w/e.  next week i will try and go an entire week driving at a steady meager pace like i did the past 2 days  i just go 35 everywhere even in 25s and stuff and then i go 50 on the highway, which surprisingly is not all that slow, no body seems to get upset and some people even follow my pace when they could easily pass.  so i think after a full week i will get better results.  but this is very impressive to me i never thought this car would do much better than 40 because of automatic drive train loss.

well, in my golf i usually see 4.8/4.9L as average

I think the best mileage calculations are based on several tank fulls since even using the same pump there can be variations in foam etc that may make it fill a bit more or less from time to time.  Keep up the good work though!  I miss my auto golf :(

Don't trust the OEM trip meter or odometer, use mapquest or something like that find the mileage of your route.

I did a test of all new hybrid cars and a mk5 tdi a couple years ago for a tv show called driving television. All the cars were brand new, not even 500 miles, and we took all the cars on long drive through the valley, and when we got back to the studio all the trip meters were different by about 3-10km's. And this was only on a 200km trip!

LWB Joe I will prob be looking at the same for my retirement car soon. If the Sammy runs again I am also looking at WVO soon. I have three shops to give me the grease and it is all good but at 60 MPG I might not have to use it.

Damn that's impressive, especially with that tranny. My merc gets me 32 mpg on average. Mind you I'm driving average of 105 kph..

Trolling for a reply on the $8.08 a US gallon we pay in the UK. We are so jealous!  :D

but u guys get better fuel haha.  and your money is worth more, and you guys always get cooler cars in europe too. i didn't fill up yet but it looks like its not really doing that good honestly i have about 140 miles on it so far this week.  and the gauge is moving normal.  i have hard time driving slow though too but i have done fairly well especially on the highway

so out it took me 6.544 gallons to go 226.2 miles. sad really. it comes out to 34.5 mpg...  so i'm going to say that my driving behaviors do little to effect my fuel consumption cause i drove very slow for all 226.2 miles.  i did check my tire pressure the fronts were both good but the one rear was down around 32 and the other side had leaked down to like 15 haha.  i hadn't checked them in a while.  i'll have to drive slow another week and see what happens with the proper tire pressure, i'll also throw in a new air filter since i haven't changed that in like 20k miles

i'm doing some tests to try and increase my mpg.  i have a feeling the pump isn't developing enough pressure, so i'm trying libbybapa's trick to increase pump pressure (gentle taps)  with about a tank in between.  so far it feels as though my car is running better... not much but noticeable?

I agree with prothe, I keep hearing folks tell me their trucks are getting 20-28MPG with over sized tires and 4X4. I think some need to retake math classes. I am dead on with my odometer and have averaged the MPG with my Samuria 1.6TD and 30" tires. I get average 35 MPG when it runs. My big truck no matter what I do still gets 13 MPG. If I could average 50 MPG in a Jetta I would go for it since they handle very well in the snow/ ice combo I get here in Big Bear.

i don't understand that because when you put on bigger tires it throws off your odometer

anyways today i got 39.25 on 161.6 miles, all i did was add more air to my tires and revert to my old driving habbits haha, i think 40mpg while driving at what ever pace i feel like is pretty good.  too bad fuel is so damn expensive.

If you use a taller tire with the same tread width there is lower rolling resistance so some gains may be possible on the highway (not to mention taller gears).  In town may suffer :S  crap shoot I say.

I would like to weigh in on this mpg discussion.  There is one more factor that has not been mentioned and that is following distance of the car in front of you.  In racing, drafting is known to increase fuel economy.  If you believe the show Mythbusters the test they did showed that a following distance of 30 feet increased economy by something like 20%.

Taller tires can save fuel but only to a point.  If your driving a gutless 84 Quantum like me, increasing the tire diameter to much can make climbing hills harder and therefore use more gas.

I agree that you have to take the average of multiple tanks to be the most accurate.  The more miles the smaller the margin of error.

I like this thread though, it is a good discussion.

i used to like drafting but its too dangerous haha, they say u need 1 car length for every 10mph, so i'm not going to follow a car at 2 car lengths at 60mph, no thanks i value my rabbits life too much for that haha
