are they the same shape? or will i find clerance issues with my mk1?
-
Well it depends on what you are referring to as the downpipe. If you are referring to the cast iron unit that bolts directly onto the turbo, I believe they are the same or very close. The part that clips onto the cast iron part is totally different between the MKI and MKII and will not work.

the cast iron piece is different and so is the lower down pipe, but u can make the cast iron piece from a mk2 work on a mk1 just gotta trim alot in order to clear the shift linkage
-
Are you sure there is a difference between the upper downpipes? I know the lower ones are completely different. MK2 TD, MK1 NA and MK1 TD are all different when referring to the lower downpipe.

i mean the downpipe that bolts onto the turbo that joins the rest of the exhaust system, i'm making a 2.5" system, just wondering if i can copy the shape of the mk2 system

Part no for the MKII unit is 191 253 805
Part no for the MKI unit is 171 253 805
I dont have the MKII unit sitting on the shelf so I cannot compare them but IIRC they are very similar. HTH!
