Title: oil leaking through valve cover
Post by: groover on March 26, 2005, 04:02:59 pm
I noticed a pool of oil under my airbox on my 89 1.6 Diesel and noticed a small stream of oil leaking from underneath the valve cover.  I tightened the bolts down more but it still happened.  Anyone have this happen?  How do i fix?

Any help would be awesome.

your valve cover gasket probobly just has some cracks in it. those gaskets are cheap to buy and are extremely simple to replace. i dont know if you've already checked it or not so i may not be any help at all but if not i would take the valve cover off and check the gasket

thanks for you help guys -  i think i'm gonna try to get one of the rubber ones and change it this weekend.

I'm hoping thats the source of the oil on the back of my engine ... gonna wash it off once i change this .

If it still leaks, you could try putting a small bead of silicone caulking around the valve cover mating surface on the cylinder head, and another small bead on the valve cover itself, then sandwiching the valve cover gasket between these two beads.  I do that on my Jetta and the valve cover gasket never leaks.  I learned this trick from a mechanic I knew in Welland.
