Title: 86 Golf 1.6 FOR SALE - NICE!!!
Post by: njj_502 on January 08, 2008, 02:12:07 pm
I'm thinking of selling my Golf to upgrade to something a bit newer and not sure exactly what it's worth.  Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

86 Golf, 130K miles, 6k less on engine b/c it was towed with a towbar to Texas 3 times.  I'm the third owner, first owner had it 6000 miles and the second owner bought it in the fall of 86 and I bought it this past April.  He was 61 when he bought it and 82 when he sold it.  Garage kept and immaculate for its age, only two spots of rust on it.  New struts, wheel bearings, timing belt, tensioner, v-belts, trans seals, CAT Fuel filter with lift pump before the filter.  Car has always had factory fuel, air and oil filters and oil changes at every 2-3K until I started driving it.  I now go about 5k on oil changes but it's all hwy miles.  I still use Mann air and oil filters.

I tinted windows this spring and repainted the wheel opening flairs (were getting faded).  Also removed door trim and pinstriping.

Car runs perfect, Ice cold A/C (38F out of the vents!!!)  I average about 42 MPG with it but that is running 70-75 MPH every day.  Engine has never been touched other than glow plugs.  Flushed brake system after I bought it.

I'd consider selling it with or without the stereo.  Add roughly $1000 with the stereo.

With the way I see GOOD, NICE, CLEAN Rabbits and Golfs selling for on eBay I'd guess it's worth somewhere in the $4000 area......sound reasonable????

Thanks All!!!!!

Sounds like a nice car.

As to what it's worth. I would say it's worth what ever you can sell it for.

Out West I wold say it's probably a $3000- $3500.00 car.

Post up a pic and we could tell you allot more.

Yeah, the plan is still to refinish the snowflakes to match the car.  One is pretty banged up tho, I'll have to teach it who's boss!!!     Not sure if I'll include them or not.  Just depends on how they turn out.  Bought them for more of a learning experience but still wanted a good end result.

Was good to meet you Duane, you have quite the collection!!!  Also real glad I stuck her TDI.....I'm a moron.....

Not real sure what's going to be next.  Planning on selling my GMC too since it sit's all but maybe 3 days a month.  Just looking to upgrade a bit since it will be my only rig......

Tyler is it hard to find good solid cars up North?  Do you have the salt/rust issues like we do in the midwest?

My 85  looked that good when I bought it in Georgia.  Same interior, rims etc.  Mine was just light blue.  Mine had 42,000 miles on it and I paid 1500 for it.   Yep, I stole that car.  What are you thinking price wise-ballpark?

I was thinking I'd take $4K w/o the stereo, $5K with.  That seems about right  in my mind.... am I crazy?

The fuel filter and base is all CAT.  It's from some of our new engines that run common rail injection.  It's a 5 micron absolute filter.  The inlet and outlets are actually quick connect fittings but the hoses slide right on.  Only issues is that the transfer pump inside the injection pump can't pull the fuel thru it b/c the filter is so tight.  That is why I installed the small lift pump before the filter.  Lift pump not shown.

i wonder if you had two filters would the pump be able to 'suck' easier...  the basis is sucking that milkshake through two straws instead of one.  plus the filters last longer too

Nice car.

Well what really needs to be done is use the primary fuel filter with transfer pump.  This filter on a machine is a secondary filter only to get the very small particles after the primary fuel filter.  The primary is probably about 15-20 micron nominal, 35-40 absolute where this one is 5 micron absolute.

Any other ideas how to price this thing guys or am I pretty much in the ball park?

Going to put it on eBay in the next few weeks.  If anyone here is interested let me know.

Will be removing the fuel transfer pump and the CAT filter set up.  Will be stock filter set up.

Stereo will be in car when sold.  Alpine deck with XM.  2 JL 10W3 subs, 6.5" JL XR components, JL and US Acustics amps with capacitor in line.

Keeping the Snowflakes as discussed earlier in thread.  Still planning on refinishing them.

Lots of new parts and this is a great driver.  Selling b/c I'm picking up an 01 Jetta in March.  PM for more details.

$4500 FIRM
