Title: Exhaust pipes sizes?????
Post by: haybayian on January 04, 2008, 04:28:08 pm
Yes I know this thread was beaten to death not long ago. I have enjoyed the thread in question but there is something that I did not think of asking. What is the sense of  running a 2.5" (or 3") down pipe when you know that the OEM  catalytic converter own pipe's ID is  1 13/16". I confess that I am rather new to all this and that I am here mostly to learn. However I need to understand what I learn. Could some one elaborate.

Lucky Baxterds... In the EU they won't pass your car for its VRT/MOT if they don't see a physical cat down the exhaust line...

but a trend has started recently of hammering out the honeycomb inside leaving just the empty bottle   and for others running the 2-3" pipe helpfull silencer repair shops can empty a catalitic converter, widen its ends, an mount it around a straight pipe... It will fool a casual VRT/MOT inspection if fuelling is adjusted before the test to a more lean mixture...

There are also high flow cats (get one off a duramax or something)

If you are punching out the guts of the cat I think you are suppose to do it underwater to avoid hazardous particles entering the air/your lungs

Or you could sell it to a scrapyard for some cash, just tell them it's from a car you scrapped

I recently cut the cat out of my mkIII (pipe broke right at the cat and so I replaced it with a piece of straight pipe) and you can look right through mine. No honeycomb or anything is visible. Not sure what it is supposed to look like, but can't see how it does anything.
