Once I get mine running, I know of one I will be able to smoke. It's my friends Geländewagen that he swapped a Diesel into. It's a heavy beast.

yeah got beat to bits by my brother's W210 E220 CDI, once that beast spools up and punches its sideways action all the way till 70 km/h with sooty exhaust and each gearshift squats the car to the ground - the mk1 TD of a freinds that I refurbed pulls hard - but nothing compared to the MB; you gotta respect 258 lb/ft torque at 1900 rpms and that slick autobox

could be both... but you don't hear of anyone trying to race (and win) vs a manual box.  "ah damn that manual box beat me again!" "maybe it's because it weighs about 100 lbs..?" "i'll beat it one day!!!"

Mercedes Benz in the USA.  Merc around the rest of the world I believe.  (Merc in the USA stands for Mercury- a Ford motor company car line)

I'm going to post an old story but a good one. This happened back when I was an undergrad. My then roomate came home with a MB 240D. It had a 2.4L NA diesel (72hp) with a 5sp transmission. Oh, and it had 285k on the clock. So, he tells me how cool the car is, and wants me to drive it. I do, and during the leisurely stroll that was being passed off as motoring, I mentioned it was lacking pep. He immediately told me that my car wasn't really any sort of a german car and was better, faster and cooler in all respects. The gaultlet had been thrown.... So, we met up at the old airport runway and lined up for a drag. Up and back was the course. We clattered, we revved, and then we launched in a cloud of smoke. I made it to the north end and turned around before he got there, and stopped at the south end, got out, and waved by the time he finished.
