That's the easy part. Getting it into the U.S, or trying to get hold of those drive line componentents in complete form is the hard part.
Man, that would be the bee's knee's if you could drop a franken or a hot m-tdi into it.

There's a true Rallye Golf for sale here in Nova Scotia. G60 and 4x4.....mmmmmmmm.

Got a lead for contact? I am chasing that Golf Country now (with it's definitely off-roady flavour), but would rather a Rallye any day.

You are now on my forever grateful list....and my wife's ultimate *** list. Made a deal with the owner today, and will fly out Monday and pick up the Country. It is all that much worse because I am on the road right now, and Wifey has to do all of the banking and arranging to get it.
Stewardc:
Many thanks. I will call him after the new year. Have to let the furor die down a bit after the Country (which I will probably go TD with some day). There are now three A2s in the driveway (and two Sciroccos, an A3 and Mamma's A4, not to mention the cars out in the storage area!) so a fourth A2 immediately might be pushing it a bit.

That kicks ass!!
I am glad you got it :)
You are going to be living under a microscope for a while now buddy. There are going to be a lot of people here with a lot of interest in your new toy.
I hope you have a digital camera. I want to see some 4-wheel video!

I'm glad I found this thread after it sold...I can think of a long list of illegal & immoral things I'd do to get my hands on one of those, and I don't need more reasons to get into trouble...
Congrats & glad a diesel fan ot it. Start with the conversion plans asap, you'll have a jealous cult following here

I imagine he will let the auction run until Monday AM when I hand him the cheque. I think he was stiffed on the last go-around, and wanted to keep his prospects lined up.

The car looked a lot better than it really is (being German and from Germany, there IS corrossion), but I took it anyhow because I wanted it. Drove home fairly well, it is geared VERY short, is softly sprung and a bit leany when drifting throught the twisties on the Rogers Pass. All-in-all, this thing seems to be screaming for a 1.6TD with maybe 90 HP, and to be kept down to the resulting low speed range.
-
Hmmm....where can I get a rabbit pick-up like that?!
-
It would be interesting to find out the gear/ diff ratio's.
-
slap in a 6 speed box... make 1st a nice low gear for getting out of trouble, and 6th a nice tall cruising gear... for the others... anything goes? that would be sweet!!!
doesn't look like too much corrosion but then again its probably all underneath. any restorative plans or just in with the 1.6TD and off she goes?
does this thing have locking diffs??? curious :)

Just make one. By lowering the entire powertrain, there is a lot of room. Use a Passat Syncro for donor.

Not going to "restore" this car, as it is not worth the time and money. It will be a spare winter beater until I have time to sort out a 1.6 TD and then slide it in when the car is not required. The paint has been on for over a year, and nothing is coming through, so it should last a while. Trying to keep things in perspective - too many projects that need serious time and $$ to get distracted much.
No locking diffs on this model, but I believe they are available from other applications of the same bits (rear, that is. Front is a regular 020 with a collar on the output final drive that turns the rear driveshaft, which is coupled by a viscous fluid device to the rear axle, so front needs a Quaffe or Peloquin for rough stuff).
What I REALLY need right now is a set of 14 x 6, 4 on 100 alloys to get the best rubber underneath (195 75 14). I just bought a set of Castelletas, but they are in my truck parked in ON. Anyone in easy shipping distance got something?

If you're considering used & not looking for anything fancy, remember that certain Chrysler rims fit too, helping expand your search pool.

MacGyver:
I am one of the odd ducks who like to keep his VWs all VWAG. Scored a set of 14" snowflakes today from my good buddy Steve at OK Tire on 8th in 'toon town (yeah, an unabashed commercial pitch, but these are GOOD guys and into motorsport about as deep as you can get). I was teetering on keeping 15s by going 195 65 15 on the original Speedlines, but I think I will do the 14" thing with Goodyear Wrangeler AT (LT tires). A bit heavy, but should be bulletproof - and this is supposed to be a LOW SPEED vehicle - to keep me out of jail. I actually want Green Diamonds, but there is but one single 195-75-14 tire in town and they are notoriously slow from Denver at returning calls.
