Read this post:

You will have to scroll down the page, I made it and it works great.  Already used it to check the timing of two diesels.  This is the cheapest option I have found, even including all the parts and tools needed to make it.

Buy a piece of 1/8" brass rod; cut it to the length you need, thread one end with a #4-32 die. Now it will screw into the end of the dial indicator after you remove the tip that it came with.

Im just wondering how to find the right length, If the adaptor or extension there mentioning above are to long then would'nt this throw the reading?

Length doesn't matter as long as the indicator doesn't bottom out. The dial face rotates to get whatever reading you have to zero, then you go from there.

Look here:

http://www.samstagsales.com/vwaudi.htm

It's the MATRA 2066 tool listed under "Diesel Tools". It sells for all of $30. It includes the adapter to put the dial indiacator in, as well as the extension for the dial tip. I called them a few months back, and confirmed that it was the nice MATRA tool, and not a crappy imitation. I'll be buying one in the coming months, as I"m tired of my crappy adapter.

Get the tensioner wrench while you're there... all of 10 bucks and works perfectly.  ;-)
