its cold in toronto. what oil should i put in?
-
I'd go to Canadian Tire and pick up some Shell Rotella TSB Black container ~$24/4L 0w40 full synthetic. Car will start much faster :)
-
hmm that Rotella TSB is over $30 at crappy tire here in the west :?
I just run regular Rotella T 15w40 but our winters are a total joke compared to the rest of canada.
-
It may be $29 now that I think about it. It has been a while. I guess I bought all mine on sale. Still well worth it IMHO @$29
-
Do you run it in the summer as well? Ive just heard some concerns about oil pressure when it gets hot...then again I spose the syn can take more heat and still work well.
-
I've run that oil year round once. Usually in the summer I got back to regular rotella for cost savings. It is designed to be a 40 weight when it's hot so I don't think you'd have problems with it in the summer. It's definitly my oil of choice
-
I used it in my TDI year round, no complaints here :) Not crazy lifter ticking or anything. The only thing about a 0w40 is that it would want to shear for extended oil changes. So say go to no more than 10k km's on a change and you should be fine.
I always ran shorter than the 15k the manual said I could go since mine was modded.

Castrol Syntec 5W50.... my oil pressure is on the edge of rebuild time and I need the 50 side during Edmonton summers... global warming dont cha know.
-
liqui moly 5w-30
-
liqui moly 5w-30
or lubro-moly from germany?
-
Petro-Canada duron synthetic 5w40. Used to be cheap and good for winter starts, recently became not so cheap though. I'm in the market for alternatives, Rotella T SB is looking like a better deal.
-
i use a elf 5-40 synthetic all year round on my wife beatle tdi and change oil every 6 - 9 k
-
elf 5-40 synthetic year round.
-
What oil? (in my best Roger Moore voice) - Lubricating, shaken, not stirred.
I use Delvac 1 (5W-40, full synth) in ALL engines around here (except a few kart racing engines that go 0W-xx) gas and diesel. I have equipment that MUST start at -45C and live happily in the desert as well. In another life, I did the tech work to formulate lubes and for a major brand name distributor (NOT Mobil), and I have the highest respect for this product.
-
Going to try out Rotella 0W40 full synthetic
-
Rotella TSB 0W40
-
I picked up a couple of the Rotella synth 0-40 at CTC last week, it was on sale here at $24 ea., in the summer I use GTX 15W40...
Cheers,
Andy

I'm running Rotella T 15-40 till breakin is completed. Then I'll switch to Delvac synthetic for sure.

Too hard to get and too expensive ----IMHO.

I know a shop around Whitby that carries it in bulk and for some reason he likes to sell it cheep!
He says its like walking around without blood in your body
so he wants all his customers to use it....
Nice guy too so...
That would be Willies Car Care in Brooklyn On Thickson Rd. & Winchester
I cant recall the telephone number at this time..
Hope that helps alittle..
-
When I was installing my 1.6TD into my Samurai I stopped at the VW dealer and asked what VW recommended. They said VW recommends 5-40 full synthetic in all turbocharged engines.

Rotella 0-40 goes on sale about every 6 weeks at the Tire for 24.95. i always go and buy a few. don't be concerned about the oil being too thin for summer. the thinner it is,the easier it flows to lube everything. on air-cooled racing forums, i would say most are using lower viscosity than higher. i use 5-30 or 10 -30 all summer in my 140hp beetle, never had any oil pressure issues, it just leaks a little easier.[so what!!-put some cardboard or kitty litter under]
-
Castrol Syntec 5w40. It's available at any Cdn Tire/Wal-mart. Kind of expensive though, I try to get it on sale. Anybody know if you can buy this stuff in bulk? Like 5 or 10 gallon quantities at a cost savings?
-
gheess .. just regular 15w40 wallsmart dino oil for turbo engines year round ... in all my VW's (gas and diesel) and change the oil every 5K.
-
Used to run dino 15W40 year round but just tried Esso XD3 0W40 synthetic and what a difference on those cold mornings.

That's why I run synthetic in the winter. Well worth it IMO. -40 starts without being plugged in, hell ya.

10X.... double "hell ya" !!
-
I was skeptical that it would make that much difference, but now I am a believer!
-
hmmm... time to return the 10w30 GTX i bought
0w40 synthetic you say :)
-
I'm liking it. :D
-
well i just switched to petro 5w40 full synthetic will see the difference when it gets cold again
-
Frisco auto parts in Mississauga carries Manhiem oils. They have a great full synthetic 0W40 and 5W40 which are extended drain (I go 10K),and really cheap.$24 for 5 litres.I have also used the Rotella 0W40,it works well too.
-
rotella 0W40 synthetic in winter, (canadian tire on sale) and 15W40 in summer.
-
Pentosynth or Castrol Syntec (not the one for gassers) 5W30 during the winter, Pentosynth 10W40 during the summer.
-
really, its personal preference. lol, i was running castrol enduron 15w40 semi syn all year, now i switched to syntec 5w40 for this winter, liking it very much for the starting, think i may run that all year, any 40 weight oil flows the same once its hot, so if u want to run 0w40 in the summer, its the same as 15w40 once its hot, its just flows better at lower temps.
