Title: Took my head off, a couple questions now
Post by: hamradio on December 11, 2007, 07:58:56 pm
Hi,
I removed my head tonight on my 1.6na, due to a kind of blown head gasket.

First question-
Antifreeze coming out was kind of a nasty dark greenish brown.  Could the blown hg have had a part in this, or is it just really crappy old antifreeze?

When I pulled the head off, a little road grime dirt kind of stuff fell in the cylinders.  Any tips of cleaning this out?

Why did some pistons have varying levels of soot on them?  One piston (#2) was relatively clean, and I could see the machining marks a little, but #1 was pretty sooty and dirty.

The cylinders that are clean possibly had coolant leaking into them and they have been steam cleaned. It could be a sign of bad injectors, bad rings (low compression, poor burn) and a slew of other things

Compressed air will get the grime out of there

Was the antifreeze kind of greasy too? Or just discolored? Mine was really nasty & full of emulsified diesel fuel & oil. Sort of a nasty black sludge.

what they said. get your injectors pop tested while you have the head off. its a good precaution. slimy coolant is usually the result of a blown headgasket.

OT, you cant have a username of Hamradio and not post your callsign in the sig or something. its just not right. KB7MRM here.

Thinking I might finally get a radio for the Jetta. The TT would look odd with antennas.

Sorry about the thread jacking. Its the Op's fault for not posting a callsign ;)

If the coolant/fuel/oil antifreeze sat in the engine for a long time you may want to do the bearings while you are in there. There is a good chance they are etched, especially if the car was driven under these conditions

The main bearings?  I dunno, I guess.  But, hell, as long as I was doing those, I might as well re ring it.

Also,
I'm KC0KBH.

Also, how much does it cost to get the injectors pop tested?  A local shop was quoting me somewhere around like $50/injector to test them.  Brand new injectors are $50, from what I am seeing.

The fuel shop at my local CAT dealer quoted me $40 to pop test all 4 injectors.  $40 is cheap insurance to know if your units are up to snuff.  I've seen injectors on autohausaz.com for something like $34 each but not sure who is remanufacturing them (Bosch or xyz injection shop).
