I bought a 1.6TD engine yesterday. See picture. It appears to have been rebuilt. I looked under the valve cover and found that it has head studs, which is nice, but one of them is missing, which is not nice. Even worse, the one missing is right in the middle. The engine appears to be newly assembled and never fired. I'll check to see if the nuts have been torqued. If they have been already torqued, do you think I could get away with putting a bolt in that center hole and torquing it to spec? Or should I relieve the torque on all of them and retorque? Or, do you think I need to put a new HG in there?

and i say while you got the pan off! look to see if the oil squirters under the pistons are there and not damaged? also that oil return line from the turbo may have a big elbo in it? it should have a near strait shot back to the block or oil pan where ever it reconects! with that many mistakes and not looking like a tru TD motor from the pic. i would investigate? what is the block code stamped on there?

I found these characters stamped on the IP side of the block near the top: CY 064 973

yep thats a tru TD block! CY was the early ones! since the motor has not been running you might get away with adding the extra stud and retorque them? looks like a nut missing there also?

That's good news that it is a TD block. I'll check that oil supply line. The thing that troubles me about the missing bolt is that it is right in the middle. Who would leave out the middle stud? I hope the hole in the block is not stripped as I am going through the same situation with my Ford 6.9/Banks van right now. Yes, I am missing one nut also. Do you think I can get one single stud? Who makes a stud kit for these? ARP?

yes ARP makes them! it's prolly a honest mistake? or the P.O. borrowed to use on another project? did you ever ask tho P.O. why it's that way?

Apparrently the PO bought the motor just like it is in a front clip a few years ago. He claims not to know about the missing stud.

so are you putting that engine in that A1 rabbit or caddy ?i can't tell in the backround of the above pic.? I think runnung the that style of exaust manifold configeration will interfear with the shifting linkage? but i'm sure it can be run that way just a little more fabin?
Yea Andrew has a sharp eye! i never noticed the oil feed line till he brought it up! Andrew is very knowledgable and precise in his explnations to us on the forum! so he's an excallent source of advice!

good eye on that return line blkboostedtruck! since it is a drain line, it shouldn't have a P trap like your sink :lol: just a nice slope right into the drain hole. if not you will have hot oil pooling in the turbo and causing massive failures/oil blowing past the control rings inside the turbo etc.
you should really give this engine a complete look over.. maybe even go as far as pulling the injectors??? also make sure the injector return lines are on properly. one side will have the plug (looks like no.4) and the other will ahve a return going to the pump.
otherwise, it looks like a nice engine :)
also, if you're going to check timing, now is a pretty good time while the valve cover is off and everything is easily accessible... although TDC on the flywheel is hard to find without the tranny bolted on :lol:
what is that stuff on the cam? assembly lube? sure hope so anyways...

While we're playing one of my favorite games, it's a little hard to tell, but does the cam saddle cap at #5 have a 4 stamped in it, and the one at #4 have a 5 stamped in it ??

Cam bearing caps are stamped nothing, 2,3,4,5 from front to back.
so are you putting that engine in that A1 rabbit or caddy
At this point the plan is to put it in a home built mid engine single seater commuter. You can read about it in another thread on IDI.

Those are raceware headstuds, not arp's. I wouldn't mix them. I would tear done the entire engine, re measure, re torque. It'll most likely be cheaper in the long run.
