This is an VW 1.8l 8v head from a MK2. The 1.6 head is probably very similar internally (as far as ports go). I knew VW heads didn't flow very well but wow...

Bone stock 1990 8V hydro head....
...the rest is pretty self explanatory...

Stock cam at highest lift, in the pics that have the valve open. No it's not the stock spring, it's just some light-duty one i had lying around the shop.

I've always wanted to do that to one of my spare diesel heas

Beautiful!

wow.. this helps me a lot with my understanding of heads and how they go together...keep in mind that 1 know about diesels but am just starting to work on them myself
-
it looks like if some of the blue area was removed, the structural integrity of the head would be drastically reduced... someone should make a full blown custom head built from the ground up :)

I actually think the 1.9 diesel head is a bit better in terms of port design than the gasser. I have some cutaway pics, credit to Dr Diesel for the sawing.

maybe the better airflow is what gives the 1.9 more low end torque? would be interesting if the 1.9 head could be modified enough to work properly on a 1.6 without too much difficulty. i wonder if it would make the 1.6 more of a torque monster?

longer stroke is a huge contributer

Certainly food for thought with respect to tidying the ports up with a die grinder!
Cheers for re-posting.

It's a straight bolt on for the 1.6 hydro. That's the Franken. If you have Good compression and plugs, and the top end is in good shape it should be no problem starting for daily driving.

Those ports do look a lot better flowing than the 8v ones. There's a lot less room for improvement. Anyone have 1.6 cut outs? Hmmm thinking about it, I've got two cracked 1.6 heads...

I think the 1.9 AAZ head is slightly better, but mine did get a lot of porting work.
