I am putting together a 1.9 TD from a long block meant to power a home built sports car. Contrary to most of you I have never seen a VW engine before taking delivery of my long block recently.
I am now at the stage of planning the cooling system and sofar the rare VW diagrams I have seen confused me more than anything else. Could one of you help with a simple drawing and possibly photos of your own engine.
Thanks
Haybayian

Hi Tyler.
Thanks for the diagram. I believe that I will need something more hands-on....(the "idiot guide to VW 1.9TD" for instance). I have a general sense of the darn thing but having spent the kind of money I spent on this engine I want to be sure of what I am doing. Close-up photos of your of your own engine assuming that you have a 1.9 TD would help.
Thanks
Pictures later

I have a 1.6TD so I can't help you out. I'm sure someone will though

Hi again Tyler
The "racer" is a rather tame cruiser. Lotus seven clone with lots of personal touches. The VW TD engine with mods should provide about 100 HP, the car weighs 1600 lbs...so all I can say is that I expect it will be fun to drive. I still have a lot of work before this thing can be licenced however. If you tell me how to post pictures here I will do it.

Not sure if these will help you out or not. They are shots of my engine compartment....a 1.9 AAZ in a 97 Jetta.

Thanks Jettafan,
Yes this is a start. Your 1997 Jetta is the closest thing I have seen to my 1996 jetta engine . I hope that someone will be able to elaborate on these pictures and tell me what goes where.

You're welcome.
Well, you can see some of the basics, like the upper rad hose and the hoses going to the heater core and the coolant bottle, both the supply line and the return line.

Hope this helps
Let me know if you need to know what the numbers stand for

I was hoping someone would take my picture and do that when I posted it. Thanks Tyler. 8)

without my garage I have a lot of spare time :P
-
Shouldn't that "spare" time be spent in class?
-
I go to class.... I only have 19 hours a week though
-
Well, that explains the spare time.

Things seem more clear now.

Thanks again Tyler,
Here is a supplementary question (correct me please if my assumptions are flawed).
Cold water enters the pump through hose 6, circulates through the block and comes out hot from the head's side port flowing in hose 5 towards the upper opening of the radiator.
Now on my rig I will have no heater and the oil cooler will be of the air type. What am I going to do with ports 9 and 7 on the water pump? Can I plug the expansion tank directly to the rad as I have seen on other cars?
Thanks.
Philippe.
