my new 86' golf 1.6na needs an oil change. I'm just wondering on what kind of oil to use. On the receipts that came with the car, the previous owner was using Castrol 10w30 but the owners before her were using 15w40 Delo 400 for diesel engines and they were a mechanic shop that worked on diesels and that was in January.
I'm just confused on which type of oil to use. It's winter here and I don't want to have it too thick. But I also want to make sure that it is running the correct kind. The golf has no oil leaks whatsoever and runs like top, but just recently there has been a faint squeek on the engine.
is 15w40 okay to use on a golf diesel? will it cost more?

It all depends on how cold it gets there. It hits -40 where I live so 0W30 synthetic is what I run. It's so much smoother. Many people on here run it year round

I run Castrol enduron synthetic blend 15-40(dad got it from work lol) all year round, or rotella T 15-40, -16 the other mornin, not plugged in, fired right up, good battery and glow plugs, it'll start, and in an older idi, 15-40 is good, winter tho, 0W30 would be better, just for easy cranking

What about for oil pressure? Oil up to the cam? I'd go thinner myself :)

yea 15w40 is good for summer... 0w40 is amazing for winter. even though she starts good i can't really imagine the key engine components getting enough oil squirted on them for protection.. unless that oil has some kick ass anti wear additives.
amsoil sells an oiler kit which basically scavenges oil pressure when the engine is running and stores it. go to start your car the next time and when you turn the key the oil pressure is sent back through the system to eliminate the 'dry' start. expensive setup, but to me it is cheap insurance and could mean a very very long lasting relationship between me and my engine. :lol:
