Hello. I'm a new VW owner, with an 02 Jetta TDI. There's no block heater installed, or any other form of engine heating. In the winter here it will get as cold as -35 C in the morning.
Someone suggested I get an in-line heater. I went to crappy tire (canadian tire) and found a TEMRO Serries 8000 (1000 Watt) heater. They also had an "Engine Hose Heater."... or should I just get a good old block heater?

Thanks for your help.

well... if anyone was curious as to what I did... I installed a Zerostart circulation heater (TEMRO) (http://www.canadiantire.ca/browse/product_detail.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=1408474396672419&bmUID=1196128781160&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524443286687&assortment=primary&fromSearch=true). After talking to some mechanically inclined friends, they suggested I go with the circulation heater as opposed to my other options. I picked up a 1000 Watt one from Canadian Tire for $70 plus tax. I found a great documented installation here (http://pics2.tdiclub.com/gwillie/zerostart%20install.htm) of the heater. It only took me a couple hours to do as well... I'll test it out tonight, and see how it works (it's only going to be -12 C tomorrow morning).

Thanks for the info

It works amazing!!!
It's been as cold as -18 C in the morning so far, and my car starts up no problem. Glow plug light is on for 2 sec max. This is with bad glow plugs too (I just got my new ones in yesterday). I'm also planning on changing out the standard diesel oil for some Synthetic 5W40. I think I'll be good for the -30 when it comes.

I Just installed the same heater and I removed the checkvalve as it will not allow coolant to flow to the oil cooler.I found this info on TDI club thanks to this guy and he even posted up his the install work  .

I'm going to have to keep this unit in mind for the b3 mTDI swap. I def. want a nice clean block heater install...and something that is reliable. This seems to have gotten very good review!!!
