Title: 1.9AAZ + straight pipe... TOO LOUD!
Post by: addautomotive on November 19, 2007, 05:13:04 am
What's that???

I SAID IT'S TOO LOUD!

That was the drive in to work this AM. My wife isn't terrribly pleased with my new 2.25" straight-through exhaust.

And too be frank, it's too loud for me too... it was actually just right when I had the resonator, but not the muffler. However, this weekend when I was welding the thing up, I decided to try straight-through from the (hollow) cat.

It's just too "boomy" under load, too much resonance. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good 2.25" muffler I can put in that will be JUST RIGHT?

I'm tempted to try a "cherry bomb" glass pack, but I've heard they don't do much for resonance. Maybe a Torque Thrust?

Anyone running anything that's a nice middle-ground?

I have yet to hear one in person.  I am planning a 2.5" turbo-back exhaust eventually but don't want something obnoxiously loud.  Some feedback is definitely good to hear.

Maybe I'll try a flowmaster.

It's strange, I have straight-through in my Samurai w/1.6TD and it's not nearly as loud.

It's hard to describe, but it's a "hollow" sounds, like it's echoeing.

I liked it with the resonator alone, but I can't put it back in now that I've gone 2.25

I put a cherry bomb "turbo" muffler on my 99 jetta TDI after putting up with the staright pipe for a week. The 2 1/4 " muffler was  $42 + tax at Canadian Tire and its now just slightly louder than the OEM muffler but flows better.

Dont do a damn Flowmaster.

Magnaflow or something like it would be the way to go.
Flowmaster's are made for hotrods and big V-8's.

MAGNAFLOW!!

I have an AAZ in my Caddy and am using a Magnaflow. It's just right.

I enjoyed the Cherry Bomb on my TDI with stock exhaust otherwise.

inside the car WOT http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6xSQal2U5M

Outside really close to the pipe outlet: to come later when I find th elink again

I would agree that a stright through pipe is LOUD, my firend has a MK II like that and it is sorta ok in the car but it is really loud outside.  I can hear him accross town when he nails it, not unlike a civic.

I found a 2.5" straight pipe too loud.  So did my wife.  And neighbours.  And dog   :D

I had the muffler shop put on a 2.5" straight through muffler on at the back.  Its......tolerable now.  Nice rumble, but still capable of setting off car alarms in the underground parking at work if I'm not careful.

Another straight through resonator where the Cat is supposed to be would do it I'm sure.  I've got a test pipe there right now, and a universal diesel cat with flanges welded on it to replace the test pipe for emissions.

That's exactly what I went with. Welded it up tonight, I'm very happy with it.

My wife drives the car to a 240 km round-trip meeting once a week, and we drive to Montreal regularly, so we couldn't have too much drone. This sounds good but it's not too loud.

I find it more than "slightly louder than the OEM"... it's still got a good rumble, but not the same hollow resonance and booming that the straight pipe had. Good day to day sound, and OK on the highway.

maybe i'll do that then. had no muffler/resonator for a few years now. about a year with 2.5" downpipe (no straight pipe, just dump) i was going to order a magnaflow but for $42 maybe i'll try a cherry bomb....

you're right its a booming type of hollow drone. gets annoying if you're not used to it. the car itself doesn't really bother me much, its all the attention it gets.

If it was a car I used now and then, it wouldn't be an issue. But as a daily driver for my wife and I, It's just too loud. Plus, it wasn't a "nice" sound. The "turbo" muffler gets rid of the drone & resonance

You bet. When I first took it for a spin, I thought, "Aww, I don't think Mrs Addautomotive is going to put up with this".

Then 5 minutes later, I was thinking "This is fking madness, even I won't put up with this"

My vote is for the Cherry bomb or anyother similar glasspack (thrush, heartthrob, etc.).  I have used them on all of my turbodiesel IDIs including the Rabbit I'm currently driving.  I also ran it around with the straight pipe for a couple of days and it was super loud, I couldn't belive what a difference the Cherry bomb made while still maintaining that warm tone and easy breathing.

Now it's all the random rattling buzzing and wind sound that I have I am trying to eliminate.

in my experience the empty cat acts like a resonating chamber, and give the exhaust an objectionable note, it creates turbulence that causes it to be heard in the car a lot more and the tailpipe sounds like it's babbling. I'd dump the cat altogether.

Flowmasters flow bad for non-turbo engines and are just plain restrictions for turbo engines.

The best mufflers are absorption types that flow straight through. They muffle well and do not restrict flow.

I was tempted by the straight-through glasspacks, but I've heard that they don't do much for resonance... which was a big issue in my case.

The Cherry Bomb "Turbo" is a good compromise. Sounds good.

The car is a 96 1.9TD with a K24, running on vegetable oil.

Ha! You should hear my Samurai turbo-diesel. It's the only vehicle I've ever owned who's top speed is determined by wind noise.

So who'd posting behind thw GreaseCar name? Is it Justin? I would love to get down there someday to see your facilities.

This is what the cherrybomb sounds like, it's quieter in the car.
