Title: 1995 B4 glow plug relay timer location and timer duration
Post by: Al h on November 17, 2007, 12:12:46 pm
Hi I am hoping you can help me as my manual has not come in yet.
I just purchased the car it just had new glow plugs put in and they are functioning. The problem is that when you glow the plugs the dash light goes out after 7 secs the power is supplied to the plugs for 20 secs or so and then turn off if you do not start the engine. If you go thru the same sequence and start the engine the power to  glow plugs remins on.I disconnected the 2 wires going to last  glow plug and have my test light attached to it.. I changed the head temp sender and the load reduction relay.I guess the last thing is the relay timer.Any other thoughts or suggestions.I have searched this topic.Where is the glow plug timer located, I searched the fuse box area and near the battey but no luck.My timer should be in on Tuesday. Thanks for your help Al

Just to be clear, you're saying the glow plugs stay on permanently when the engine starts... like for more than several minutes ??

I ask because some afterglow is normal... dependent on engine temperature... but I believe it can be several minutes in length for some engines.  It improves drivability and reduces emissions.

The relay is pretty smart... it knows, for instance, if you haven't engaged the starter and shuts off the pre-glow... just like your test light shows.

Yes the glow plugs stay on  while the engine is running . I have disconnected the wires so they will not burn out the glow plugs and have my test light connected. How long should the glow plugs stay on when starting the engine cold( after the satandard 20 sec) I have read some posts that give 2-3 minutes as a time period but mine stay on constatntly which lead me to believe it could be the temp sensor but I changed that.Where is the glow plug control module or relay located. Thanks Al

Found this:
The engine is equipped with a new design glow plug with self-regulating fast start
Function:
- pre-glow begins with ignition switch activation
- the pre-glow time is dependent on coolant temperature and is displayed by the glow indicator. There is no pre-glowing over +60 C (140 F)
- the preparation time starts after completion of the pre-glow time and lasts 10 seconds
- the post-glow begins after start (starter off) and ends after expiration of the post-glow time (approx. 180 seconds) or when a coolant temperature of +60 C (+140 F) is reached
