Title: shifter rod shape

What is the exact shape of the shifter rod going from the shift box in the car to the shift tower on the steering rack on an MK2

I pulled my exhaust sheild to straighten it out (slight rattle) so I see that my shifter rod is bent smoothly in the middle. More like a horizontal parantheses.  What Im asking is that should it be that way?
