Title: need some opinions on a potential new car
Post by: burn_your_money on November 07, 2007, 09:07:16 am
I'm thinking of picking up a 83 TD Jetta. I'm looking for a second (third, fourth etc) opinion of the car

This is what I know so far

200k kms on the car
The cylinder head needs to be replaced - replacement head in the backseat
injectors are rebuilt
solid body
new fuel tank, exhaust, shifter, brakes
May need windshield, new one included
He rebuilt the bottom end, bearings, seals
An unknown amount of KMs later the turbo seals failed and it ran out of oil which is why it needs a new head
It still needs a turbo replacement

What are the odds that the block is still good? Anything seem fishy about the story? Anything I may be missing?

Thanks guys

Normally I'd grab it without hesitation but I don't have a garage and it snowed the last 3 days :brrr:

sounds legit but who knows. know anyone who's dealt with him before? depends a lot on price... i know if something is wrong you'll just replace it or fix it, so if its cheap enough.... why not?

worse comes to worse you can throw the engine in from your old jetta...unless you parted it.

Tyler, I hear ya on the "working outside when it's -10C with a wind blowing snow down your shorts" thing, but I have to say, it sounds like a great deal and since you already have an engine to drop in it.....pray for a good weekend real soon.

Mind you, that second caddy looks sweet.  8)

Decisions, decisions.

what a deal, i'll for sure consider it if you aint gettin it. Although i did buy a gasket set today for my diesel chevette so maybe i can get that thing going soon, also i found another for sale, if its cheap enough i'd for sure get that over the truck.

I say go for it! You have an engine just in case, and it's cheap!

If it's too cold and snowy bring it down to my neck of the woods, you can use my driveway, The weather is perfect to be working on cars outside this time of year. You'll even have a tan to show for it

I'm looking at the truck tomorrow Nate, I'll let you know

Where did you find the gasket set for the vette?

I was going to get a mk1 but I found a mk2 instead. What fan switch do you need? The motor will live for a while I hope.

What a pain in the ass this car has been. I had to remove the rad to take the oil filter off. I'm pretty sure the previous owner used an impact to put it on!

And I found out I don't have an exhaust leak. It was an intake leak. Turns out my blow of valve did just that and blew off. Lots of bad stuff in my engine  :(

Ripped out alot of the AC crap as well so that helped clean stuff up. More pictures later

That's quite the fixer upper there Tyler.

As for the oil filter, it could also be that it has been on there forever, as in never changed. The have a habit of seating on really well if left for a long period of time.

Have fun playing with this one.

The engine seems healthy. I'm going to compression test it when I get my rebuilt injectors.

It has a few bad glow plugs though so it's a real pain to start.

The weird thing is even with the BOV blown off the boost still hit harder then on my 92 Jetta with the T3. I think I'm going to like this car

nice. looks like a runner and sounds like its in reasonable shape.

ps - too late now, and i'm sure you tried... but what about jamming a screwdriver through the oil filter so you have a bar to pull on to twist off the filter? no dice?
Title: need some opinions on a potential new car
Post by: burn_your_money on November 15, 2007, 12:43:51 pm
I thought about the screw driver through the oil filter trick but I'm pretty sure it would have just sheared it in half, then I would be grabbed nasty sharp metal and oil trying to get it off.

I put some new fenders on that car and wow could you ever tell that it was in an accident. The hood was sitting on top of the passenger side fender. I decided to stop there and scrap the car. It's currently sitting at my parents house awaiting it's demise.

I pulled the engine out of it this weekend but there are a few more goodies I need out of it for my new car. lol

So this is the newest member of the family. Currently I'm on the verge of parting the stupid thing out

I got it cheap because the PO couldn't get it started. Ha. I towed it up and down the road until it started (not so easy with summer tires and snow/ice covered roads). The PO was rather impressed and seemed to think he sold it for cheaper then he should have. Too late then.

So I buy a bunch of parts, timing belt, waterpump (the bearing was totally shot, probably 0.010 shaft play) and a thermostat. I already had new glowplugs. I borrow my friends nice heated garage and start working on it at 6pm sunday night. I would have started saturday but the whole dy was spent pulling the engine out of the black car. I'm in the garage until 4am trying to get the damn thing drivable. First I broke the main power cable that goes to the starter. It must have been old since it just snapped in half. Then I forgot the glowplugs at home so I had to drive back to town (normally 15 minutes) but it's a blizzard so I can only do 50 so it takes about 30 minutes. I get the glow plugs and grab the power wire from my previous new car. Get back out there and get to work. Turns out I only had 3 glow plugs, the 4th was MIA so I just put in one of the dead ones in the #4 cylinder. I had to swap pumps because this one leaked so I put the one from my OG black daily that I crashed. Get it all timed up and decided to put some coolant in it. drip, drip, drip ****!!!!! I had snapped one of the flanges on the oil cooler off.   It's about 2am and I'm pretty pissed but I carry on. I go to remove the other half of the snapped power wire and the bolt on the starter solenoid dislodges itself from the solenoid. Nice, now I need a new starter (I have like 15 spares though). At this point I'm so mad and tired and frustrated with the stupid car that I put the front clip back on and head home. I wake up at 11 and go back out there again. Swap on oil coolers, refill with coolant and success! almost. Now it's leaking from the coolant flange at the side of the head.   X100000

I decide to call it a day and push it outside in the 12 inches of snow and get it loaded onto my dolley. I tow it back to my place, grab a quick shower and then get my dad to drive me back to Sudbury because I have a test at 4pm. I get to Sudbury at 345, just in time to grab my books and get to class.

I hate this car. Oh yeah, it was also in an accident (which I was not told about) The front bumper rebar is all pushed in in the center like it hit a pole and now that I look at it it almost looks like the passenger side fender was replaced.

But I still love it  damn diesels

Holy frig Tyler. Sounds like if it weren't for bad luck, you'd have had none over the weekend.

But not a bad score on the car though. I'm sur with your expertize and ample parts supply, you'll have quite a runner there.

And there's just something intoxicating about diesels.

Son of a....

So she's all ready to go, I get my trip permit and am just topping up the cooling system (I had a leak overnight that I fixed the day before) and what's this... bubbles in my coolant reservoir? Splendid. Hoping they were just air bubbles working their way out I let it warm up and give it some revs. Everything is going well until I try and turn on the heat to defog the windows. Clogged heater core. Not the end of the world, I wanted to install a non-ac box anyways. I shut down the engine and hear some bubbling/hissing noise from the engine. Closer inspection shows that my headgasket is pissing coolant. Hurray

Off to the junkyard with this pile

And there was you thinking that the seller was thinking that you took advantage of his ignorance   Talking about double blufffff

How come all your cars in the America's have cruise control? Here in limey land that's only slightly more common than a/c on these mk1/mk2 stuff and I know of noone with a/c apart from me!

I don't think I've owned a mk2 that didn't have cruise and most have air and PS as well. I hate all that stuff so off it goes

Ironic that I bought the mk1 jetta you spoke of in your first post...
Looks like a pretty solid car, except for the unknown engine troubles.
Planning to swap another longblock to simplify getting it on the road

Surely you can put together a fully functional vehicle with what you have kicking around

This is my current collection of parts

Plus the random items I've been storing for my truck, but they don't count. I just sold 1 complete engine, 2 block/head combos and one block this weekend. I'm running low for once  :?

How is that Jetta that I was going to pick up? Do you feel it's a good buy?

Some guy picked up that rear beam last night and is a good old fashioned dubber. He said I can use his large garage for repairing my car so I think I'll be doing that.

I need to stop running synthetic. This is the third batch of fresh (less then 500km) oil that I've had to throw out.
Title: need some opinions on a potential new car
Post by: burn_your_money on December 12, 2007, 09:48:58 am
I'm debating a new plan. I have a completely rebuild TD head in my garage that I was going to use on my Caddy but I'm tossing around the idea of a TDI (possibly m). So I could drop that head on instead with the metal HG, and I could use this as an opportunity to install my EGT probe.

Now the problem is I'm thinking I may as well tear apart the bottom end while I'm in there, but that seems a little over zealous.

What's the best way to clean a head that is drenched in assembly oil?
Title: need some opinions on a potential new car
Post by: giulianot on December 12, 2007, 01:00:09 pm
you could bathe the head in diesel fuel or just use brake clean :D
Title: need some opinions on a potential new car
Post by: znate on December 12, 2007, 08:02:09 pm
if you decide to scrap it i could buy that oil off you, so long as i know before this weekend.
personally though id throw a new head gasket in and drive it. you may as well get some use out of it before its parted.

Yeah I'm going to keep it. I cleaned up an intake manifold and I'll be installing my EGT probe. I'm planning to do the valve seals while I'm at it
