Title: Oil level sensor mod?
Post by: jtanguay on November 07, 2007, 03:02:50 am
Just curious about the VW's with the oil level sensor mounted in the pan.  What If I adapted one of those pans & sensors to my motor?

does anyone have a clue of what type of signal the sensor puts out?  i'm wondering if a normal electronic oil pressure gauge would show a reading from the sensor.  obviously it would be totally off, but i could then do an oil change, fill up the gauge right to the lowest point on the dipstick, then mark the gauge as the lowest point, then fill up with the rest of the oil, and mark that on the gauge.

am I crazy or what?  feasible?   at least if something blew and i was losing a lot of oil, i would know before my oil pressure gauge drops and i hear the engine knocking...

Would something like this work?

bought it.  what i'll do is calibrate it while the pan is off the motor.  see how much oil is left in when the LED starts blinking :)

much cheaper than the sensor & special pan!!! and i was not looking forward to installing a weak aluminum pan.  thanks for the link

Come on, give!!!!!!!!

Did/Does it work?

WE WANTS TO KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heck yes I am excited!!!

Will keep gf from becoming ex-gf!  Maybe.

"Oh, the little red oil light came on, should I add a bit of oil?"

This is from a cell phone call last weekend.

Anyway, is there the 3.5" above the drain plug, or are you going to weld in a 1/2" fitting at an angle to alowe 1) clearance, 2) proper oil level (~2.5 to 3 qts?)

Hummmmmmmm.................

oh sorry for not getting back to you sooner!  my plan is to install a bung with dual fittings on each side of the pan to make a leak-less seal.  i may try to weld it, but i have no welding skills and no welder (but i know someone with one... i might give it a go)

once that is done, i can start experimenting with the angle of the oil pan.  fill it with 4.4L of water and see at which point the sensor turns on/off.  i'd like the sensor to turn on when i'm down about .75 to 1L of oil.  so i'll just measure that out and calibrate the sensor by adding spacers or any other way it can be modified :)

i think my best bet will be to install it near the oil drain plug as the oil is deepest there.

still haven't received it yet.  i'll keep you posted

i could really REALLY use this on my current motor... i'm forever popping the hood just to make sure it has enough oil... damn you blowby!!!!!!  i had to stop boosting past 10 psi to lower the blowby too... 20 psi is fun

Okay, this could be fun.......... :P

Down by 3/4 quart,    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......................

Any one know how much oil the engine acually uses?

I mean while it is running?

4 ~ 5 quarts to fill with oil filter change,...run,...X- quarts in pan when cold,..running (warmed to operational temp) leaves how much in pan?  :?

In pan by pump pick-up, no hard cornering, (Baffeled anyone? )

How in the heck would one tell? Turboed should have more "in motor" than NA.

Oh , Dave, now that you are "resting" HELP!

BTW, speedy recovery!!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm..........................

"Drip" stick showes ~about 1/2 quart low if I getts out and check real quik after running for 20 to 30 minuets.

Set it for to notice less than 3 1/2 quarts in pan?

Gods above and below, This was supposed to be simple....REALLY! :?
