Title: I have an exhaust leak.
Post by: Op-Ivy on October 22, 2007, 05:32:34 pm
A friend noticed it while driving from behind. He said that some of the diesel smoke wasn't coming from straight out of the tailpipe. I took a look and saw that it is leaking from here.

Is there a seal in between the two pipes? What is involved with fixing my problem? I did a search and couldn't find anything.

Thanks,
Matt

Yup there's a seal... a big braided lead/asbestos/depleted uranium donut... ok, so maybe not the depleted uranium part.

It's a bit soft and so conforms to the shape of the two pieces.... 15 to 20 bucks with new spring clips:

Thanks Vincent!

I talked to my dad about it and he knows a little more on this. Apparently the seal was changed 25k ago but the clips are still original. Thanks for the help!

The seal is soft enough that it can get bonked during an install or the normal shifting of the engine.  I *always* renew it when the exhaust system is apart cause they seem to go bad easy.

A mechanic I know always coats both sides of the seal with some kind of pink high temp goop which seems to really help the seal do its job and last a long time.  Dunno what he uses... could be hi-temp muffler cement, Locktite, or the like.
