... the body appears to be quite a bit thicker.
Since I don't have the 1.9 injectors out yet it will be tricky running from store to store eyeballing one for fit.
Does any AAZ owner out there know a definitive source of a deep 27mm socket that fits the 1.9 injectors ?? Bonus points if it's a Canadian source ??!!

This post covers a bunch of the info you will be looking for. I had the same problem. I ended up cheating and taking them off in two pieces. Wrench for the top of the body, socket on the bottom half.

Yup, thanks Jim.... I saw that thread but it wasn't clear to me if it was referring to 1.9s.
I'm really really trying to avoid removing the top half half 'cause I want to pop test them as is and see what they were set for.
The search continues !

as long as you can get the fitting on the other end of the injector it should work.
theoretically you should be able to pop test an injector while in the motor... you just won't be able to check the spray pattern unless you have some sophisticated scope with a nice light (like they use in medical procedures which would be $$$$$$$$$$)
just pump it up slowly, and wait for it to pop. :) i doubt it would work with most injector test stands, unless you can take most of the stand apart.

Ah.... but I also want to be able to replace injectors at will... play with Mercedes nozzles... etc etc etc.

I had the same problem with the AAZ injectors I ended up getting a Wright tools 12Pt 1-1/16" socket the flutes run all the way to the bottom of the socket instead of only half way up like all the others I tried. I got it at KMS tools here in Coquitlam. They are on the net at http://www.kmstools.com/ Cheers Dan

I bought a regular 27mm deep socket and put it in a lathe to get clearance, YMMV................

What you need is a thin wall socket....I used to borrow one from a diesel shop here in london.......it was a snap-on. Or you can take a regular one and machine it on a lathe.

I don't think that the problem is on the OD of the socket. It is on the inside that the interference occurs with the return line nozzles at the top of the injector body. You would be a better man than I If you could bore the inside at the top only without taking out the flutes at the bottom as well. I paid about $6.00 for the one that I got which just works. I've seen a couple of things done.
I bought a cheap deep socket from Princess Auto and had my Dad hollow it out on the lathe at work. (Its nice having a machinist around)
My brother bought the proper socket from Snap-On but its about $40. Its their special socket for all vw, mercedes etc diesel injectors. Just search their web site for the number, not all the Snap on guys know what your talking about when you ask them.
I've also seen another home made one, made from two sockets welded end to end. Cut off the top of one and weld it to the bottom of the other to get the clearance that you need.
But it think the 27mm deep socket from Craftsman is supose to work with out any modification.

Yes, the Craftsman 27 mm deep 1/2 inch drive does work, at least on 1.6 injectors. You won't get one for six bucks though!

Check at Crappy Tire.
Not on the regular tool rack, over in the "HELP!" tools.
Look for the socket for doing GM oil pressure switches.
I built one (Yeah! It's nice to BE a machinist!) to get at the pressure switch on my GM 6.5, and found that it was the same size as the injector nozzles on the Jetta.
It might be worthwhile to drag in a 1.9 injector to test for depth.
Could try Princess Auto, too.
