Title: Possible to replace strut bearings on a2?
Post by: trent77 on October 17, 2007, 04:54:32 am
Just want to double check the service manual. I just need to remove the top nut and drop the strut down and replace the bearing right? Just want to make sure the strut will not fire a spring off at me. thanks for your help.

No, you need to compress the spring. I did mine this year and almost shot a spring at my head because I thought I didn't need to compress the spring.

my springs didn't shoot at me.  maybe they were bad?     the lowering kit i had was so easy to put on... no need for spring compressors :)

I managed to get mine off without using the spring compressors, but had to compress them to get everything back together.   They jumped a little when removing them, but it was ok because I knew they would and had them aimed in a safe direction.

Do I get an Honourable Mention in this years Darwin Awards for using polypropelene rope to bind up the spring? 500lb's of compressed rage sounds like fun in my little garage. :D

I believe that the requirements for honorable mention involve blood.

I wouldn't even thing about pulling a front spring off with out compressing it first. Thats just crazy. It is a good way to get hurt.

and slip a chain thru the coils just to be on the safe side  .. you're gonna need the special tool to remove the knotched nut that holds the bearing in place ( ground down spark plug socket with 2 fingers sticking out...)

this job has long since been done. I was able to rent the spring compressor, and as for the special nut, i just had to tap on it with a punch, then thread it with my fingers. thanks for the info.
