Title: Help 86 1.6 N/A IP Leaking!! Need advice!

Was having trouble getting my crank pulley bolts off to do my timing belt and water pump, so took it to a shop and had it done. Everything done, starts right up, but now I have diesel pouring out between the motor and pump. It was fine a few weeks ago when it was running :shock: The mechanic is talking about the new fuel might have made it leak, but I don't believe it would happen that fast if it did. It was great before and I'm wondering If anyone had any ideas?

By that you mean? Is it leaking from the pump? If so where?

The mechanic's info was that it was leaking between the motor and the injection pump, trying to get more info now.

Ok so now I have to decide between a rebuilt Giles hi pro pump for $750 or a rebuilt one for $400. Any input?

pretty much a no brainer, go with Giles pro pump.  the timing advance mods will help decrease fuel consumption, and within a few years you will have saved the extra money spent on the pump in fuel prices (unless you have a lead foot)

Find out exactly where the leak is and decide on how long you plan to keep the car.

I had 2 pumps leaking from the choke cable assembly. I used 1 rubber o-ring and 1 copper washer I think and that solved the leak. Saved myself several hundred $$$ for the price of a $20 rebuild kit. And I only used a fraction of that kit.

The mechanic says that the pump is leaking from where it bolts to the engine. I'm supposed to go look at it tommorow. I wish there was an easy fix. But I know it isn't that easy. I want a Giles pump, but don't know if I can come up with the $750 :shock:

I just ordered a performance pump from Giles. I plan on keeping the car soooo I bit the bullet and got one. Now I'm going to have to get the a/c running by next summer :shock: I hope its fixable.

Hmm. Good news for Giles I guess. Fixing it yourself if not too hard. You can buy a complete seal kit for about $20. That will solve the leak for sure. It's a bit time consuming, but not technically too hard, just time consuming.

As for the pump leaking so fast: I just had a car I sold come back. When I sold it, it didn't leak a drop. After I sold it, it just came back 4 weeks later and the pump is now leaking. The fuel in the tank was the old fuel, and the owner just filled up with a ULSD/Biodiesel mix. So: yeah, the pump can leak that much that quickly.

The pump on my son's car only leaks when the tension from the timing belt is removed. Then it pours from the main seal. The input shaft has lots of play. It is possible your timing belt was too tight before and caused the bushings to wear and now that it has proper tension the pump is leaking.

If it is the input bushings, they can be replaced but if the pump body is affected at all you will need a replacement pump.
