Title: Tapping, What can it be???
Post by: mattmatt on September 14, 2007, 07:03:20 am
Hi there. I've been reading this forum for some time now and found the info incredibly useful. Unfortunately i'm a bit stuck with a tapping noise on my T4 1.9 TD. Its got the go-slow 68bhp ABL engine and has done 80k miles.

The engine makes a tapping noise like a bag of nails from startup and does not go. If anything it gets slightly quieter when its nice and hot going along the motorway but as soon as you slow down it comes straight back.

I've fitted new tappets, cambelt, oil pump, a few oil changes with various oils from fully synthetic 5w-40 to thicker stuff and even tried adding some top end treatment which had no effect. The oil pressure is 2 bar at idle an d goes up to a maximum of 7 when revved which seems spot on, all taken from the head. The noise does not go away when you press the brake pedal a few times either and it doesnt really make that sort of noise anyway.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I've heard some mention of weak valve springs but gather that was on the higher output engines. The previous owner who had it from new said its always been like it, how true this is i dont know. The noise doesn't sound right though when compared to other vw idi's from the same sort of year. It does seem to be from the head somewhere.

Any help would be great before i end up pulling the head off!!

Matt

mine has the same tapping at idle.   VERY noticeable when the engine is cold, and goes away when the engine is good and warm.  sounds like its coming from the head too...  sounds like metal hitting metal...  i've just grown used to it.  car runs ok for the most part.  i've even taken a peek under the valve cover... everything looked kosher...

i was thinking it might be valve guide clearance, but i dunno... i just think it sounds rougher than what it really is.

i'd say just keep an eye on oil level & coolant level and forget about it.  and be sure to let the car idle for a few seconds (when its hot out, and longer as it gets colder) to get some oil pressure/flow started.  that will ensure a longer life to the motor.   when you do drive it when cold, baby it as much as you can.  when she's hot, go nuts!   (but remember, the more you push it, the more oil it will burn unless it's a tight engine.)

Im in the same boat. I have a 92 TD in my Caddy and it sounds "unhealthy" but runs great and no loss of power. Anyone with advice please help. I was considering replacing lifters being there hydro, they may be bad, but it a lot of work for a maybe fix. Please help.........

as i said before... i suspect some play in the valve guides...  i wouldn't be too concerned... just monitor oil consumption and drive on!
