Title: I'm a new 1.6TD owner
Post by: ry_guy on September 05, 2007, 11:28:59 am
About a week ago I made the decision to buy an 85' Jetta 1.6TD from Maine that I found off of craigslist.  It has 220k on it but 2,000 on the rebuilt engine.  It has new glow plugs, alt, brakes, and snow tires.  The owner wanted $1800, but I showed up with $1400 and talked him down to $1350 because it needs a wheel bearing :).

I got home and my friend replaced my struts with 500 mile stock struts and neuspeed race springs for $100 including everything.  The ride sucks but it's lower and doesn't ride like a Cadillac (all prev struts were blow and TWO springs were broken).  I bought a set of snowflakes locally with good tires for $125 and slapped them on as well.   But 2 days ago one of the tires got a really bad sidewall bubble for no reason   .  Anyways, here are some pictures (bad camera phone, I know):

I've got a couple of n00b questions (yes I searched):

1.  Since my exhaust is basically non existent what size exhaust should I replace it with?

2. Also, what are some effective and cheap ways to make my diesel a bit faster  8) .

Thanks!

Also, what is the stock 1.6TD's boost level?

Usually around 8psi. Do a search on boosting. Lots of info on here!  :D

Thanks everyone, much appreciated.  I can't wait to start modding my TD!

What size exhaust should I get?  I'm gonna have a local mufflers shop make a cheap side exhaust with no muffler/resonators.

Also, assuming I get a good MBC what kind of boost can I turn it up to on a stock engine the way it sit's right now?  I'm in the process of junkyard hunting for a good IC later today.

haha nice car.  my rabbit currently has the small 13s the same as you have on the front of your car, well i have 2 13s on the front with cheap tires, and 2 14x6's in the back with bridgestone potenzas, the cornering is very fun, lots and lots of understeer and lots of tire noise.

single best improvement that can be made before you start too much modding is to paint that driver side rear door.

I'd like to see photos of the interior.  You hardly ever see an 85 Jetta Diesel that isn't blue or silver with a blue interior.  Is your interior black/grey?

Oh I've got plans  :D .  I dont want to paint one door because the paint on the car isnt much better.  I'm spraying the car next week John Deere Blitz Black.  It's a tractor paint that comes out looking like this:

And yes, I have the crappy blue interior.  I hate it.  I need to do something with it.

K more questions.  My tach/speedo are both off.  I know at 65mph my speedo is reading about 80mph and my tach is reading the rpm's I SHOULD be at if I was at 80mph.

Any leads on how to fix this and what could be the problem?  Also, I have a leaky injector.

Any help is much appreciated.  I feel like a total n00b.  Diesel's are so new to me, but I'm loving it.  I don't think I'll ever get rid of this tank.

For exhaust run as big as you can without going deaf. 3 inches is good. A better downpipe really helps as well.

Where is the injector leaking from? It helps to wash the engine down, start it and watch it to identify the source of the leak

i wouldn't bother with a larger exhaust without a larger downpipe to match, but thats my opinion. with that engine, 2.5" seems to do well, thats what i have on my 1.6TD and 1.9TD. passenger performance is now offering 3" dia downpipes which should reduce EGTs even more than 2.5". only real issue then is fitting a 3" exhaust without hitting the rear beam, etc.

2.5 or 3 inch exhaust will do the job nicely.. but definitely get the down pipe.

I spoke to the kind folks at Passenger Performance today.  I'll def be going with a 3 inch downpipe and 3 inch exhaust all the way back with no muffler or resonators.
