I have a Garrett Turbo on my GTD - where do i fit the boost controller?
There is a solid metal pipe which runs front the side of the turbo (with a Banjo connector on the end I can see) and it runs around the back of the turbo and goes back into the back of the turbo - i've traced all the water / oil pipes and dont thing that that is one of them Am I right? Or can some one spread some light on this with a few pics??

If you look on this ebay auction on the T3 rebuild kit there is a solid metal pipe (close to screw no12) which I'm hoping is the correct pipe to put my boost controller onto??

That sounds like where it should hook into. The metal pipe should go to the waste gate from the compressor scroll.

I just installed a boost controller a month ago on my 1.9. It came with a ''T'' with a restriction built into it. I installed it with the arrow pointing toward the waste-gate and the valve went into the modified ashtray for a stealth look. Then I went for a test drive and to my surprise, even with the valve fully closed the boost climbed to 15 psi. I never wanted to go past 15 so goodbye adjustability! I replaced the restricted Tee with a free flowing one and the boost dropped back to normal and I can now open the valve to adjust boost where I want it. Before installing it I did some research mainly on this forum and some recommended putting Tees and check-valves in the system but in my opinion check-valves are not required on a diesel as there is no vaccuum in the intake. Am I right or did I miss something?
-
Mine doesnt have a check valve on it - its just the adjuster - I was sure it was the right pipe, even before I asked - but I wanted to make 100% sure before I go cutting it with the saw! Just need to fit my 3" straight through exhaust and i'm set!
-
Coincidence! I took my exhaust out of the car yesterday and was planning a visit to the muffler shop this week for a 2.5'' straight pipe from the down pipe back. Let me know how it souds! I ran mine last night with no exhaust at all and it's loud! But I could have been listening to the turbo all night.
-
My buddy has a 2.5" straight pipe from turbo back on a 1.9 w/ K14 it sounds relativley quiet. And yes the turbo is sweet sounding.
-
i've got a 2.5 straight through on my GTD.
Its louder then most exhausts, it sounds like a bad boy racer car mixed with a tractor tbh, the sounds pretty cool through and gets very queit after a few thou revs.

If U are doing this, can u take some pics as i plan on doing this on mine?
Also what boost controller have u got and what exhaust?
Thanks alot, Joel

You probably already know this but don't forget to block off your intake relief valve (if the GTD even had this?).

This is the boost controller I fitted :-

The quote at the bottom of the listing from polo6n1600i is me!

I'm running a VAG downpipe (its off a GTD which didnt have any front silencer box) and I'll be fitting a complete Ashley Rally System. I'm a trader and got it at a huge discount direct from Ashley. Its a 3" straight through with 1 single can on the back and it end in twin 2.5" round pipes. I had one of their 2" systems on one of my old Golf GTi's and it was pretty loud. cant wait to hear what it sounds like on the GTD!
Oh and even with the controller just turned out 1/2 a turn i'm seeing just over 1 Bar of boost! Plus i've tweeked the fuel screw back 1/8 of a turn and it doesnt smoke like it use to. Cars in the rear view mirror use to dissappear!

Hey montanaGTD if you get a chance could you snap me a pic of your freshly installed boost controller too?
-
Will do! I'm still messing with the pipework to get it up under the dash - Its currently in the service book slot and I can adjust it of i want, but it isnt easily to hand. So i'm thinking about getting some more pipe and remounting it through one of the switch blanks in the dash beside the speedo clocks.

Wouldnt mind a few pictures of the boost controller install, also where did you T off for the pressure gauge.
Am in the process of fitting my radio into the bottom slot of a genuine Votex console, top slot for electric window switches. Putting a set of VDO, Oil Pressure, OilTemperature and Boost gauges where the radio should be.
Hopefully get a few pictures of the install.

Same with me:-

Gauges were the stereo normally fits, stereo in the lower vortex panel and electric windows switch in the upper vortex panel.

Does it look like this?

I put mine in place of the larger black hose in this pic. Basically one end goes into the boost controller (same as the one pictured above...ebay special) and the other end goes back to the lower side of the metal line.
Works fine and has been able to supply me with up to 19 psi on a regular basis... Just make sure you tune it the first time with the valve all the way open so it doesn't spike/overboost on the test run.
-
yeah - it looks a bit like that, but my pipe was all metal - no rubber hose.
I'll get it set up properly soon. but i ran out of time with fitting it so just rejoined the pipe with a rubber hose and left it like that for now! I'm on a 12hr night shift and all i really want to do when i get home is sleep!
-
I fitted mine yesterday, climbs up to 1.2 Bar 8) . Now all it needs is more fuel! :)
-
I'm going to buy this for my GTD.
However i'm wondering MontanaGTD if you could show me pics of your install, or just a pic of the general area, i want to understand more clearly what involved..
Also are the instructions any good?
And what about a boost gauge so i no what boost i'm running? anyone got a link on how to fit one of them or?
cheers,
-
Boost gauge just uses a tee to hook in, and has a hose between the gauge and tee. Probably best to put it around the intake or on the line to the LDA.
