As some of you know,im a gen tech
I was living in cleveland ohio for 10 years as a gen tech/engine rebuilder
Well, about a year ago i moved back to my hometown, and never realized how much I missed it here.
its "country" here, and i was stuck in the city(cleveland)
so i wanted to get back into generators, and ive got a great job now in the area where i grew up
granted things have changed, new developments coming in...
theres been alot of people moving up from nyc to here(us locals call them "citidiots")
But anyways, theres lots of beautiful scenery here+history too
if George Washington stopped to pee, they marked the area with a plaque
enjoy
ill tell ya the town where the pic is from, but thats about it
maybe it can be like a game, and local people reading this thread can try to locate stuff
I got here to Moores Mills for a service, the door was so rotted it fell off
(http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/8083/hpim0841bf5.jpg)
unfortunately a big hairy thing crawled in and died while the door was off
im not sure if it was a squirill,or 'possum
(http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/7209/hpim0842uu7.jpg)
lol, rofl now im just up outside Pine Plains and you want me to service that?? I cant even get to it!!!
this was AFTER i used the truck as a battering ram to get to it a few days previous
a mouse chewed a hole in the air filter, and went down to the throttle plate
needless to say,the unit was faulted out on over crank(no start)
this is the rear of the unit(gen end)
nice they kept it sorta trimmed around the propane tank, what about the gen?
this is the left side of the unit(from looking at REAR of gen)
after using about a half a can of wasp spray, i opened the door slowly, getting ready to run like a little girl.
notice vine growing on door
(http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/3962/hpim0846sa7.jpg)
i forgot i think this thing is around a 30kw katolight, and has a propane fueled 3.0 gm 4 cyl on it,note mouse poopie
(http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/5485/hpim0847wp7.jpg)
this unit was severely neglected,it was installed in 02,and has approx 79 hours on it,and has the orig. battery+oil filter(never had an oil change)
MAN,look at that view!! too bad it was overcast that day

lookie that view

Very cool.
What is that generator for? it looks like it's in the middle of no where with nothing around
-
its a standby for the house that is a little further up the hill
yea its gotta be 150 feet away from the house
to me,its still a "small" generator though, but im gettin used to it
i dont know if its too good an idea takin pics of these houses
im sending a link to my boss+manager, sort of a "documentary" ,as long as i post pics occasionally
-
Is it common for these generators to be propane powered? Mostly because the fuel doesn't go bad as fast or what?
-
thats part of it
i think big gasoline generators were"banned" years ago, fire hazards
they are now nat. gas/propane vapor(or liquid with special carb, but very similar to propane vapor)
usually a simple regulator adjustment /spring removal will convert from natural gas to propane+vise versa
i havent seen alot of diesels yet, i guess people dont like the noise/smoke
and they cost more, but usually they sit on top of their own fuel tank
there have been a few "big " diesels ive seen ,but those are mainly at businesses/industrial places
propane units are reasonable$$ up to 100kw

Cool it sounds like an interesting job out in the country.
-
cool. yeah, rodents will crawl into anything in upstate ny. There is a groundhog living under my garage, and field mice love living in my garage, while the chipmunks live in the dirt under my porch. fortunately none of them has crawled into one of these spots to die yet. Opening up one of those gen enclosures sounds like junkyard door opening in the midst of summer - you never know if you'll disturb a beehive!
-
Looks like you are in a good area to go deer hunting. They must be crawling all over the place up there.
Since you are the Gen. man, I have a question for you. I will have an extra 1.6NA on hand after I do my TD swap. I was really interested in setting it up as a standby generator. I have a pos 5K now that sucks down gas like it's going out of style. I figure a 50hp vw diesel unit should put out all the power I need, and do it for a lot less fuel. Of course it helps that I can run it off home heating oil :) No running out of Gen. fuel during the storm. I have 3 275gal tanks = 825gal of fuel for the home, Gen. and "off road" use 8) . I have heard people talk about set-ups like this, but have never seen one. I figured I could either set it up as a stationary unit in a shed near the house, or have a solid rolling frame built so it could be somewhat mobile. Keep it in the garage or something.
Is this something you might be able to help me figure out? I am guessing this would be real popular. I looked at some diesel generators a while back that could power the house. Pretty pricey.
I am guessing that if you had a good 1.6 on hand, you could do it for a lot less. watayathink?

most small gens run at 3600 rpms(engine speed),and with a 2 pole rotor,itll give you 60 hz
a "bigger" 4 pole rotor equipped gen runs at 1800 to give you your 60hz
theres some equation that ive got in literature
basically a 4 pole rotor,1hz is = to 30 engine rpms
1800 rpm gens are so much quieter, but you need more engine
hp and kw are the "same" measurement,so if you dont have good hp from the engine,it cant handle the load+will slow down engine speed, that is a big no no on generators, gotta maintain the speed
im thinkin a na vw diesel may be able to run a 15 kw gen at 1800,maybe
hell you could strap a large gen onto it,and whatever you can get ,ya get
ive seen a 3-71 detroit engine with a 80 kw gen attached
the engine would only allow make enough power to use about 35,maybe 40kw
as long as you know your limits, this is acceptable
id personally prefer a 1800rpm unit,versus a 3600 rpm screamer
in my pics, the small one is 3600,and the "big camo'ed" one is an 1800rpm unit
a 1.6 would be ok,yea you could build a housing+ stuff,,put in an automatic controller for the set, with an automatic transfer switch
one thing is you need to do something to make the governor in the pump to a gen style,so it maintains the speed you set it at at all times, cause its sitting at a steady speed,or else put on an electronic governor, that may be kinda cool actually
i hates meeces to pieces

I wonder if you could get some gov contols off a 1.9 IDI industrial?
My gas gen is the 3600 kind. Way loud, and it just sucks down the fuel. It does not have enough oomph to power my well pump and other items in the home. I dont have a trnsfer switch. I just throw the main switch off, kill all the breakers I dont need, and backfeed. Not the best way to do it, kind of a pain in the ass really, but the transfer switch set up aint cheap.
Anyone here running a vw diesel Gen setup?
It would give me some good ammo for when the wife wants me to get rid of that "old nasty looking engine".
Baby, we NEED it  .
-
VW industrial has used a lot of different engines for Gensets. 4 and 5-cylinder gas, diesel, and even the 2.4 6-cylinder diesel. I think they even had some aircooled versions of genset engines. PartsPlace usually has some of these laying around, you might even find a good used gen. to hook up to your existing engine:
http://www.partsplaceinc.com/IndustrialEnginesVolkswagenParts.html
Neat stuff. I have little knowledge of how most of these systems work but they are really interesting.

back out in ohio in the akron area,a guy used a 1.6 na for a industrial pressure washer
he cut up an old trans and used it like a bellhousing to mount the pump to
more meeces to pieces in esopus

i know one's a 25 kw,and i think the other is too... both katolight

I'll have to post some pics of my home setup. Power goes out monthly out here in the sticks. I felt pretty stupid standing around in the dark so last year I finally built one for myself. 3cyl 870cc thermo king (yanmar) diesel, 8kw meccalte 1800rpm gen, dynagen autostart controls and an interlocked breaker whole house transfer switch setup. Super quiet and built for life. I can fire it up and transfer it remotely while still in my underwear. 8)
I work on lots of generators, but it isn't my specialty. I'm more of an industrial controls/machinery guy. I repair lots of regulators and control boards for the local gen guy and get sucked into a bit of field work on occasion, usually stuff that is larger, uglier and more complicated than he wants to deal with. I also have greenhouse customer with a 900hp@900rpm 565kw cooper-superior natural gas prime power unit and a 450kw 16v71 for standby. Big stuff... The noise is incredible in those closed rooms with those big engines. I just hate working on them. I also work on a bit of airline ground power and aircraft air conditioning equipment. That stuff sits on the tarmac year-round with the block heater plugged in, makes it an excellent source of mouse and raccoon ***e, sometimes even run into the animals themselves...

That big green one next to the house, you should paint on some eye brows and a nose.

sounds like a nice setup,quicktd
i like 1800 rpm units personally
today i went to a "different " place, where time has seen to forgotton, and lots of "leftovers" abound

after all that fun and jazz in downtown woodstock...(did he say woodstock man?) i had to go to work (http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/2571/chappelledrugiegb0.jpg)
one of my jobs was to install a light on a generator
dont laugh,its important!!
now the customer can "see" a fault instead of an annunciator panel being used
i knew the silly honduh boyz were good for something,12v strobes from "any" auto parts store
i still feel that the disco strobes are rather controversal in a place like woodstock though (http://img236.imageshack.us/img236/9829/205tyroneabbb11gs2.jpg)

cool stuff, it must be interesting to go to all these random backyards of the hudson valley. I used to deliver high end architectural concrete forms on a flatbed truck to building sites all around this area and saw some mega-mansions, and yes, they all had generators. mice got into my rabbit out in the garage, tore up all the underhood insulation and made a nest of it near the blower motor. what a mess. nuts and twigs and *** in every crevice of the engine bay.

I'm starting the same job on monday, getting a van (everything crossed that its a T5 tdi), ending my 3 week defection to volvo and back to a vw, hopefully a mk2 mtdi

Here's some pics of my generator,

The Yanmar diesel was set up to govern at 2600rpm when it powered the reefer unit, some (ok, much) screwing around with the governor springs has it running 64hz no load to ~58hz full load. As good as I can get it without it becoming unstable and "hunting". Heavier governor weights might get it better but it works fine and I'm tired of playing with it. It pulls the electric water heater and the central air combined just fine, what more can you ask for?

Anyone have any photo's of one built with a 1.6?
-
Anyone have any photo's of one built with a 1.6?
I've seen a few built with 1.6 and 2.4 (6cyl) vw diesels. There were a bunch of cabinet mounted generators on the surplus market a few years ago. The engine was mounted vertically with the generator hung off the bottom. They were all 3600rpm units. I'm guessing they were out of telecom sites, judging by the way they were packaged. I don't suspect the 1.6 would really make much power at 1800rpm, maybe 10-12kw, but when wound up to 3600 they would make good power, if you can handle the noise...
Don't take this the wrong way, I like VW diesels, but there are lots of better engines for generators out there. Thermo-king or carrier reefer units have yanmar's, kubota's and isuzu's, the direct injection isuzu's are really nice. All the reefer engines are tuned for low rpm power, have proper governors and make excellent generator engines. They are also plentiful and cheap, if you know where to shop... The VW makes its best power at high rpm, which doesn't make for the best generator and the pump isn't really set up for constant speed governor operation, you would need to change a few internal parts to make it work properly.

i think its a very cool job aidan,,i hope you like it
sometimes you have to be like macgyver+fix something with nothing, just to get it online quickly
think :rocks+twigs+shoelaces+zipties+duct tape :o
nice setup,quicktd
ill have to get pics of my "portable" 15kw kohler(yanmar 4 cyl diesel powered,1800rpm),mounted on a trailer for "portability"
my dad built an airplane hangar with it,it was funny to see him runnin that "big diesel" and runnin a 3/8 drill off of it  just a little overkill

Yeah its going well, 99% of the work is for Tesco though rather than small private work.
Van turned out to be an 07 VW T5, 2.5 PD 130bhp. They have a fleet of them, and I was shocked to learn they top up the oil on them with the stuff they buy in for the generators!!
-
i guess its cheaper in the short run like that
i mean,oil is oil,right?
anyways,I got some more pics fer ya...
yea i was in woodstock AGAIN,and seen this guy.....

hey, when in woodstock, try to be one with nature, and use natures surroundings to make your generator one with the earth, budda sez....
see the natural conduit support?yea,nature... man.....peace...lol

for the life of me,i couldnt find this generator!!
the directions were good, but i just couldnt see it!!
the driveway is 30 feet on the other side...
i went thru a (cut already)corn field to get to it..i drove past it 2 times before i came walking thru from the driveway and spotted the meter with the switch on the backside
after 20 mins i found it

its gonna be fun replacing those hoses, they are hard as rocks
these lil float switches are cool..
if you remove the E clip on the end+turn the float over, they will change their signal for what you need(normally open,or normally closed)
i drove past real slow ,and it looks clean!!
better check under it though
then put a vw td engine in it to make it right

Thanks for the pics from Windham... relatives of mine built their retirement home not far from there on 5 acres back in the early 90s and we visited regulary. There's just something about the drive up 23 on a clear day (pref without the Troopers camping out) or 23A if you're looking for a driver's road... or even Platt Clove Rd for a REAL gut check. Biking in the summer, skiing in the winter...
Back on topic with the gen repair... I'll try to get pics of the generators at school. They have 3 or 4 massive Turbo Diesels waiting to kick in at any moment.

cool to see all your pics, You should have called me that day you passed through New Paltz. Funny that you saw my truck (oil cooler is being replaced). Liked the pics of the mouse by the spark plug, and the one of the car under the deck on that house (was that a Ford Fiesta/Festiva? Tail lights made me think it wasn't a Rabbit) Cheers!

My father built a generator.Used an 85 Vw 1.6 ltr.Now hes got another one and hes given the motor to me .Needless to say that its a work in progrss.Ive got pic let me see here it is still on its trailer. You can see the engine control module,And that orange in the back is the generator.

i bet you burn alot of green driving out in the boons like that... what kind of mileage do u get? like 300 miles per ounce?
-
i'm thinking a 1.9TD with nice small turbo would be more beneficial... plus just make the engine run at one rpm setting and let the surcharge of juice charge some batteries 8)

i had to cut+ paste... ,is that a generator controller???
i used to work on a 1.6 d powered pressure washer this guy built when i lived in ohio at my old job
i bet you burn alot of green driving out in the boons like that... what kind of mileage do u get? like 300 miles per ounce?
yea bein near woodstock and all
bart gets like 10 mpg when you drive it easy
speakin of that i was at a job near the hudson river near the end of summer, and i swear i could smell somethin funny growin in the woods whenever a north wind came on

most "normal" generators run at 1800 or 3600 rpms to give 60 hz (depending on amount or poles on generator rotor)
overseas stuff runs@ 1500,or 3000 rpm to give 50 hz
so if you wanna run a 4 pole rotor ,then you have to run your engine speed at 1800 rpms, nice+quiet
but then i bet a 1.6d would be lucky to run a 10-12 kw gen at that speed
run it at 3600(and go deaf),and you have more hp to run a bigger gen
most small portables, and small home standbys are usually 3600 rpm units
the bigger stuff with"car" engines are "usually" 1800
heres tons of pics since its been a while
i was afraid of the birds man....they perched in that far tree and crapped their brains out

this is a hose spigot that i made to replace the crappy plastic leak prone expensive(50+$) crankcase breather hose on my ahu tdi,,,just use 1 inch id clear braided hose@home depot to connect it to the valve cover
cut er out on the ol bridgeport

it figures..the generator was out on a low water temperature fault

this is a pretty cool install, basically a modified broom closet almost
(http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/2751/hpim1017dc5.jpg)
this was phunny, this generac had a bad battery charger that was mounted in this spot ,and there were threaded inserts on the panel to mount it
what are the chances that a katolight charger bolts on???
enlarge the mounting holes to 3/8 and it bolts right on  ,and looks all pro with the nice lil j-box too

Is there really that little snow there??? We were hoping to get the family together for some skiing during Easter. I guess we'll end up going to dirty Jersey and wear shorts and t-shirts (assuming we can dig ourselves out by then... )

Nice pics. I'm looking to move up that way in a few years. Working in the city is not as bad as living in it, but while you are getting the "Cidiots", we get the nieve "Country bumpkins" from "Uncle Dad Land" who think living in a mosaic place like NYC, holding hands and singing "Kumbaya" they think that all will be well and good.
Then they get mugged or robbed.
I personally am no fan of the "Hipsters", who shop for their clothes at thrift stores and look down upon civil servants that serve and protect them. They seem to lose that small town neighbor mentality where neighbor helps neighbor, and give us a hard time when we go there for fire calls or when they overdose.
I'm looking in Columbia County, and a few others. I like the east side of the Hudson River more, but the west side gives me the NYS Thruway access for a straight shot to Brooklyn, which is much better than the Taconic, time wise.
Any good places to live on either side, let me know if you want. Decent schools, low taxes, and friendly little towns I'll take anyday over crappy schools, $9,000 a year in taxes for a 100 X 170 piece of land, and crappy roads.
Stay safe, stay well, stay warm. Jimmy.
