Title: newb needs help in seattle!!

i finished rebuilding my motor (1.6td) , but i am very inexperienced with timing the pump. a friend helped out and the car will start, but it doesnt like to idle. plus on top of that there is a lot of smoke so i am freaking out. i have tried to have my mechanic help, but getting him to my house is like trying to get a pizza delivery guy pick up some brews for you, it aint gonna happen....

i have a bentley and i just bought the tools to time the motor. i will be trying to again this weekend, but i got beers ( or whatever ) for whoever helps me.... PLEASE!!  :oops:

I would be there in a sec if I was closer..

Timing mark is on the flywheel, look through the hole on top of the bellhousing. insert the dial indicator in pump and follow the instructions in your bently.

the marks on the camshaft & flywheel line up. its just the pump timing i am having trouble with... like i said though i will be trying it again, but id like an expert (or at least something close)

The procedure is covered in the Bentley and is explained in pretty good detail... here's another link, although you have to ignore the "preset the gauge to  1mm" in the first description... the second description is a scan from the Bentley:

Best if you read the procedure and then post with specific questions.... any day now I'm going to do a pictoral HOW-TO since it seems scary but it isnt.

 do i leave the gauge alone when it stops moving or what?

When it stops moving you turn the gauge face to reset it back to 0. Don't actually move the gauge, just the scale.
It just makes it easier to see how much advance you have.

I usually set my cars at 1.00 or 1.05

UPDATE:

finally spent enough time on it to get it right. it was very very very out of spec, but after about 3 attempts (if that) we had it set perfectly on 1.00 and she fired right up. i even took her around the block just to make sure there was no issues. if the alignment wasnt so off i would still be driving her right now.

thanks for everyones help, there was no way i could have done it without ya'll :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D

it should be my daily again before the week is over, i just have to take it to the alignment shop and get the final approval and once over from chris at fine tuning, then im set. thanks again
