Title: replacing injection pump:how do you know where to put pulley
Post by: chrissev on February 11, 2005, 06:34:52 pm
OK so I'm looking at the bentley and it is sketchy on this.  If I take the pulley off the old pump, then put the new pump in place and then put the pulley on the new pump, how do I know where the shaft is as far as which cylinder is having fuel injected into it?  I know I can find TDC with a dial gauge but I won't know which cylinder I am on.  Perhaps the pulley only goes on one way?  Or is there some way to tell which cylinder you are firing on?  I wish bentley would be more specific with this.

Unless this is a late model 1.9TD, the pulley has a key in it and it will only fit one way. The timing pin then locks the pump in the proper position as you install the belt.

If it is a late model 1.9TD and you removed the pulley hub, you are hosed. :D  It is possible to get the hub back on in the proper orientation, but it's tricky, hard to explain and beyond the scope of this post.

nope, not a late model 1.9TD.  It's a relatively early 1.6TD (built in August 1987, sold for 1988 model year).  It is a full TD with the boost enrichment on the pump (not an ECO).  I haven't taken the pulley off yet.  Just preparing to do the job of replacing the injection pump with a rebuilt one.  Will probably do this in March or April depending on the weather (too cold right now).
