Title: PD timing belt
Post by: Andrewb on June 30, 2011, 02:42:38 pm
I've been having some issues with changing my cambelt on the AJM in my passat.
I have a new belt, tensioner, damper and water pump, but I'm getting a whirring noise from the belt.

I've still got the 4mm gap between the damper and the tensioner arm but, the belt is wandering from side to side about 1mm on the water pump and crank. This I'm sure is wrong and will wear out the belt pretty quickly. My only thought is dodgy water pump bearings on the new pump. I need to try the old one to test that theory, but I wondered if anyone had any other ideas?

Any help much appreciated!

Did you replace all the rollers? Did you loosen the sprocket on the Cam/IP to even the tension around the belt?

Thanks for the replies, thats a useful vid.
All the rollers were changed and I did the procedure correctly.
A new noise has developed which is definately from the water pump when listening with a tube touched against it. So I'm going to change it asap.
