Title: ALH engine and ECU management in 1998 Jetta
Post by: 4BTA4ME on July 18, 2007, 07:43:06 am
I have my ECU, engine harness, throttle pedal and engine from my wrecked 2001 tdi Jetta. Can I use the engine managment portion of the 2001 ALH ECU? I guess the question is will it manage the engine without dealing with the immobilizer issue.

If you have the whole car why not just swap over all the immo stuff as well? It won't work without it unless you have the ecu re-programmed by someone like Upsolute or RocketChip.

I don't have the car anymore. I did keep the ingnition key and key cylinder though.  I don't have an ALH instrument cluster. I'd rather not go and buy an instrument cluster and cut up my dash to make an ALH cluster fit if possible. Are you saying it will it run the engine management with some reprogramming by Upsolute or Rocketchip? Anyone else have information?

Ah ok

Talk to Jeff at RocketChip - he can definitely remove the immobiliser, then it will run just fine. I've been talking to him about doing the same thing to an AHU. Of course it would be rude not to get a stage 1 remap at the same time  :D

What are you going to put it in?

I think my 1st choice for vehicle would be my 1998 Wolfsburg 2.0L Jetta and second choice would be a 1998 Suzuki 4x4 Sidekick or ZUK Samurai with hardtop. I could end up with a potential rock crawler with one of those. I was getting 53 mpg when the ALH was in the 2001 Jetta.  My 4BTA pickup is getting me 28 mpg. Would be nice to see 53 mpg again.
What is the HP gain with stage one? Sounds like a VR6 clutch may be in order there.

Are there any phone numbers for Rocketchip or do I have to wait several weeks for an e-mail response? I read it takes a long time to get an e-mail reply.

I think stage 1 is about 110-115 bhp.

I got a reply from Jeff the same day so I guess it depends on how busy he is.

Anyone know what stage 1 chip price is at Rocket Chip? I got one reply back from Jeff on Immo defeat but no reply back on price.

I think it is around 300-350, price varries based on volume, GTG's etc.

Does Rocket Chip have the ability to do a full check out an ECU or at least the engine management portion? My entire engine harness was severed in the car accident and I'm concerned that I now have a damaged ECU from shorted conductors during the severing.

He should be able to do that.  Marc (Redrotors) also has the skills you seek if RC is too hard to get ahold of :)

Does Redrotors also have the ability to disable the IMMO software? I'd like to get both the checkout and a stage 1 upgrade at the same time.

99.999% sure he can do that.  http://www.mikrotuning.com/, there may be other alternatives for you down in the USA too, such as someone who may have put a PD150 into a MK III... :)

Thanks Slave2School.
Mickrotuning has already responded and he does take care of the IMMO problem. We are now working out my needs regarding chip program.

I see that the ALH CAN signal for the OBD-II port goes through the instrument cluster and then to the OBD test plug. Since I'm not using an ALH instrument cluster will I have a problem getting proper OBD-II scan tests by the local E-Chack station? I'm hoping the OBD signal is just passing through the instrument cluster to activate the code light.
Anyone familiar with this?

The can wires aren't really used for diagnostics in MK4's. They're more or less the on-board "internet" of sorts for the ECU to talk to the cluster, ABS controller, trans controller, etc. So long as you have the K-line running to the diagnostic port it should work fine. Though, without the cluster you will have a code for data bus something or other. Basically a code because the cluster isn't there and possibly another for the missing ABS and airbag controllers. Your check engine light will not work since it runs off of the can-bus system and neither will the glow plug light unless you get creative.

VWMIKE,
It looks like I can have the ABS and airbag MIL signal inhibited but I'm curious about what this J533- "Data Bus On Board Diagnostic Interface"  modlue does in the ALH instrument cluster. Do I need work arounds or additional defeats for missing signals from that?
