Title: Quality German Autoparts
Post by: mvptrukin on June 17, 2006, 02:51:28 pm
Has anyone purchased used engines or transaxles from www.qualitygermanautoparts.com; Montclair, CA? The only place I've seen them besides their website is The Samba.com where they advertise intermittenly. They had one bad review on there but I think the buyer was at fault and it seemed like they tried to resolve the issue fairly. If price is no consideration they have some interesting diesel used diesel engines and transaxles from Germany. They also have the 1.6TD IC which I believe was only offered in Europe .
                                                                             Thanx,
                                                                              Pete

Not sure if anybody is watching this, but I'm also looking into getting an engine from Quality German Auto Parts. Just wanted to see if anybody else has experience dealing with them and whether or not their engines are worth it. I have an 81 rabbit with the 1.6 NA engine. I'm looking at a direct swap or possibly stepping up to the 1.9 NA. The engines I can find locally on craigslist are just a little too iffy for me. I just paid to completely rebuild my head and I'm having the same issue I was having before I had it rebuilt - blown head gasket type issues, so I don't want to waste any more money on my current engine in case its no good.

Try to check out gex.com  also and compare the pricing.

Does GEX ship you the 55 gallon drum to lean over? Is there a core charge on it?

Unfortunately in this life the only reliable rebuilt engines for these cars are the one's you rebuild yourself...

GEX has a HORRIBLE reputation.

15 years ago I got a rebuild kit from them for a type-4 engine.  It took 4 or 5 times shipping parts back and forth to them before I had the correct parts for my build.  All the mistakes were theirs.  They never reimbursed for the shipping charges for shipping the wrong parts back to them.  From what I've heard I got lucky...

I've heard mixed reviews about Quality German - mostly good, a few not so good.  Their prices are a bit high, IMO.
