Title: Is Alternator same on 2001 Jetta as 97 Passat?

I need a Alt.for a 97 Passat have one from a 2001 Jetta, work?

Yes they interchange diesel to diesel, however one plug is square (passat), jetta round (2 pin plug). Same bolts and similar amps too. VR6 works also.
