Going to be installing a "16v" roof antenna on my ECO. Can someone with a factory-installed antenna on a MkII Jetta take a measurement? Just trying to approximate the right location. Mainly want to know the distance from the top edge of the rear window moulding (closest to the antenna) to the rear edge of the antenna base.
Any help appreciated!

Anybody? :(
Pleeeeeeeze....
-
well you need to drop the head liner to install the cable so you can look your self! just make sure your past the roof stiffener !
well hope that helps?
Duane
-
Yep, I know I have to drop the 'liner, etc. & was going to use my common sense... I just thought it would be a handy cross-check to have the factory measurement too.
Thanks!
-
nobody will never know the difference and you know the general location!
but do put some silicone around the hole it will help seal and keep the metal from rusting where you drilled! just a tip?

Which mk2s came with the roof antenna?

Which mk2s came with the roof antenna?
early 90's i think?
Duane
-
oh yeah, late GTIs right? (90-92)
The internet tells me the Scirocco is 3", nothing for the mk2 though, just some guy breaking a guys fingers for snapping his antenna off
-
yep thats where i been raping them from!
Duane
-
Yes, early 90's GTI's & Jettas. 8v & 16v GTI's (I had a 90 8v GTI) and 16v Jettas & Jetta GLI's I think.
BTW, a drop of crazy glue on the antenna threads stops those pesky antenna rapists...

Roof mount!!!!
Damn I thought that antenna was suppose to be on the hood!!!!

Maybe someone can correct me here, but I thought
roof antennae were only for gasoline-engined cars.
The point being to keep the antenna as far from the
engine electrical system as possible (spark plugs, etc)
to avoid any radio interference.
Since diesels don't have spark plugs, etc., it seems to
me the location of the antenna is largely irrelevant.
Or have I misunderstood?
-
The Fuba antenna that are on VW's is amplified which gives great reception. I've been toying with the idea of mounting one on my Jetta.

no thats a miss-consumption they were mounted on top just for being the highest point of the car and it was a new style of antenna and looked stylish on top! radio interference was just caused by certain plug wires had nothing to do with being diesel or not!

Does any one have pics of one of these? I know where there is a GLI in a junk yard and might go steal it.

Here's a DIY:

And a pic of the OEM antenna:

Thanks i guess i have seen them. All of the MK4s have one don't they? They look a little different but same idea.

Yes, they're quite similar. Maybe the mk4's is longer, but pretty much the same thing.

Got it installed a week or so ago. Worked out pretty well - took about 3 hrs I'd guess... Hardest part was fishing it down the pass. side A-pillar, which is how the factory routes 'em. I went with the amplified type (by Hirschmann), and the reception is quite good.

Got it installed a week or so ago...
and you're not going to post pix for the rest of us who still want to know!?
I'm thinking about putting one on my 81 rabbit, but more of a stubby ant than the one shown above.
-
Okay, okay... I'll try to take a pic tonight & figure out how to get it posted.
Edit: Hmmm... went to the FAQ on posting images. Looks like I need to link to another site where my pics would be stored - is this still correct? If so, anyone know if Snapfish would work? I don't have my own site (though maybe could work on it...) :?

Yes, just do a google picasa account. If you're on a mac you can upload right from iPhoto.

Thanks for the tip. I'll figure out how post a pic or two after I get my car back. It's in the shop for a tranny rebuild but hope to pick it up Saturday. Here's to smoother synchronization and a better final drive ratio! (oh, and a slimmer wallet... )

Falling in the category of better late than never... Hope this works!

I'm thinking of doing this too. I don't listen to the radio often but when I do the reception I get is terrible...
-
Thanks for the compliments... It really isn't too hard. Patience is key, though. The headliner is fragile. I'd allow the better part of an afternoon, to be safe.
Reception is pretty good, definitely better than my half-broken fender antenna. This one is amplified. Make sure you get an amplified (powered) unit. More expensive, perhaps, but better as I understand it.
-
Bringing this one back from the dead.
Where can you find Hirschmann or any brand amplified roof mounted antennas? I'm tired or not having a radio and just relying on my iPOD and cds.
-
I can get my hands on Brand new Amplified Roof Mount Antennas, I let you guys know how much they are ;)

I put a amplified antenna ( bladetype ) new from ebay u.k. installed on the roof of my caddy
I installed a South African front end : fenders, core support , bumper, grilll and didnt want a hole in the fender
paid 110.00 for the amp antenna, had to run a pos wire and a fuse to install
ran the two wires up the A pilliar and new complete int after that
I just centered it..

I think my AMP'ed antennas are around 45 Bucks But I'm going off Guess lol.
-
I just looked over, I can get 3 styles, Amplified, Non Amplified, and A normal one, prices will range for 10 to 50$$
-
I'd like an amplified one.
-
Ok, I'm working out a price right now with the guys and I should have a good quality AMP'ed roof antenna. ;)

I'm interested, but what do I do with the hole in the front fender once I take out the stock antenna? Its a powered one that extends out, broken of course.
-
You can get a antenna plug from mk1 autohaus
Ebay item 320108441879

When I installed my new South african front clip the fenders had no hole for it, I went with a amplified blade type on the center of my caddy roof, Looks like a little shark
-
Even if I don't decide to put a roof mount on, how do I replace the antenna anyways? Sorry for the hijack
-
GAP has these as well, I bought a replacement Hirschmann unit for my Corrado. The "rake" angle of the antenna is a little bit different than the o.e.m. Fuba, but the mounting and wiring is exactly the same.
