Title: my "special" golf.. :)
Post by: RedRotors on January 20, 2012, 02:23:33 pm
Ok , it's not a diesel, but it's a VW, at least :) I imported it from Germany, 2 years ago, but never publish any pictures. The car is sleeping in my garage, waiting to be restored 100% factory. I imported many parts from Germany to restore it, OEM suspension, interior, decalc, engine parts, all the original light ( rear and front ), original tire cover, door handle.. etc.. I spend a lot of money collecting parts from europe. I'll probaly start to restore it this summer.. Here's a few pictures..

hehe I hope that you have been able to put back in place your jaw..  ;) Mine also falled down when I saw the truck with my car on the trailer..!

Basically, it's the same suspension as the Passat syncro with trailing rear arms but it's mount on a tubular subframe. Front and rear shock has been specially made for the country.

here's a few pic of the subframe

Man this thing reminds me of the Subaru Justy we used to own about 10 years ago.  1989 with the 4wd option.  Only this is a bit bigger and beefier.  Very cool, VW could sell tons of these in the states if they wanted to.  Just look at those Kias or small SUVs coming round now.

If there's enough demand, I can built an exact copy of this subframe at my shop.. When my broken
leg will be healed, I can take a look..

Ref '' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Golf_Mk2

With only 7.735 produced, it is not much chance in finding one.

There is one only 15 km away from where I live, but the owner would not sell it.  :(

Other than modifiying a rare car, what is stopping you from dropping a tuned AHU or ALH and making this a proper off road rig?!  ;)

It's been quite a job to find a good one, so I will rebuilt it factory, and only use it for show.. I know.. here up north, we have a lot
of snow and it would be the perfect car, but with salt and if an accident happen, I'll be a real pain..

you MUST bring that to MVOC this year, it would be wicked to see that there, you would laugh at the boys with the Lifted MK2 Jetta Syncro with a boosted AHU in it.

Unfortunatly, the car won't be ready this year.. I have to finish my garage, them I'll strip the car for a complete rebuilt,
so maybe next year.. I'll try to go at the waterfest and bug out too.

I have an 89 golf that I would LOVE to synchro-nize. put a 1.6 n/a in it, and do the synchro swap, I am pretty experienced in offroad fabwork so I could probably built if all if i knew what I was building, only problem is, I would rather have an eco car, just an eco 4x4 would be better. I live near and work in the oregon dunes national recreation area (tourist sandrail driver) I personally would want to make it a slightly long travel setup, make it where I could fit some quad tires, possibly even paddles... lol

that would be the SLOWEST vw ever..

even slower than an automatic diesel w/ a/c

Kev,  he might not care about speed if he is on the sand dunes.  Just having the torque of a diesel might be fun enough.  If he is going to paddle it all the better.
Speed is second to just getting motion going.

I do know a standard VW with the air knocked down to 15 PSI does well on the dunes.  My kids did it all the time.  We also owned a 89 4WD Subaru Justy and it would kick butt without the tire pressure lowered.  Man would we get the looks from the monster trucks on the beach when four of us would pile out of that little tin box.

idk why it took me this long to see this...

but for the sand, you dont need torque, you need POWER..

sure, paddles work great, but they dont work unless you can SPIN THE HELL out of them..

our aluminum rail has a 327 chev in it.. safely spins 10k rpms.. seen it bury an 8k autometer tach plenty of times.. this engine has been alive for 30+ years.. well, its about 500hp, and like 200 ft lbs torque..

paddle tires need power to float on the sand.. if you have limited power, but lots of torque, i just dont think it would work good..

you need power in the sand.. look at all the buggies that go the best.. they have LOADS of power..

vehicles with less than adequate power just sink.. they cant spin the tires fast enough to get on top of the sand.. sand is much like water.. you need to get on plane.

and im not just saying this to say it.. ive spent a good portion of my life on the oregon coast dunes with different quads, bikes, and rails.. the first rail i ever drove was my dads fugitive framed VW powered rail.. had a BUILT 1835cc a/c engine, dual WEBs, and a fatty header.. that thing was damn fun. but it had power too.. ive seen plenty of baja bugs, and rails with stock, low power a/c engines, and they just dont go good. the ones with no power also beat you more.. you feel every bump rather than just skipping across the high points..

i should post up some pics of the rail one of these days.. a couple of you guys would poop..

Well, it's been a while since I finally had time to start working on the Golf.. I started the teardown, here're some pics.. For a 22 y/o car, it's not rusted that bad.. It will be a long process to entirely rebuilt it, but I now have place and plenty of t ime.. ;)

My problem is that if I have the time I don't have the money.  And IF I have the money I don't have the time.  Place is usually in the driveway.

That's significantly less rust than my 13 year old Subaru... I'd love to see it!
