Title: Cheap RWD "cool" car $1500-$3000?
Post by: wolf_walker on June 07, 2014, 08:40:04 pm
Thinking hard about a TPI C4 corvette.  I know the ups and downs fairly well.  What else comes to mind? Not a Mustang or f body, and preferably not European. I've had euro cars forever.  Alfas and later spitfires and such are cheap, but rough in my price range, plus cali smog.

I keep coming back to the vette or aw11 mr2.  I'm sitting in the latter, but it's the wife's and has title issues(but it is supercharged) .  And smog legal NA's are kinda slow.  Plus they all are either 250k+ or modded to death.

Suggestions?

A $1500 Vette will be pretty ragged out too.  They are pretty simple and well built for a GM though.

Yeah, decent 85 or 86's around 2500-3k here, not a big market for them unless they are pristine apparently.  Shame crossfire is so lame.

no euros?

is a cop-edition crown vic 'cool'?

there's a '65 ford falcon out here asking $3k. the straight six in it is not running, but the body is straight.

toyota mr2 and various nissan/datsun Z cars are in that range. and other non-Z nissan sporty things, resplendent in angular glory.

chrysler cordoba in the local listings for $2300. no word on the presence of rich corinthian leather. 6.6L engine tho.

Cop-Vic is very cool, as are a lot of euro autobahn bruisers, but I've been driving relatively sedate euro cars forever, turbo volvo's, turbo saabs, E30's,
merc diesels.  Wanting something sufficiently different to hold my attention for more than six months.

CA smog kills a lot of neat cars though.  I could register one out of state but it'd have to be worth the effort.

Early Z cars have been on my list, but my budget is asking a lot of a pre-76 model.

The Falcon or Dart or such with a pre-smog straight six to megasquirt has been a one-day plan too, but
finding the right car cheap has been trouble.  Plus we have some great driving roads around here, something
sticky would be good.

MR2 or an Alfa really would fit the bill, just haven't seen a good enough example close enough to make me want to try yet.

There is that white 85 Corvette for $2500, 120K or so, looks like an average car for it's age and such, pretty close by.
Might go look.  I do not have fond memories of the creaky body but I see the aftermarket has some good attempts at
chassis bracing available, and how wrong can one go with a TPI L98, four wheel disks and independent suspension?
It's like a fancy Camaro to me.  Good friend had an 86 back in the day I used to wrench on, and was riding shotgun
when he lost the back in a sweeping 140mph curve in the middle of nowhere.

Pinto wagon counts as cool.  But needs a lot of un-ford'ing to be I'd drive it cool.

Saw a Vega GT wagon with an inline six and a stick the other day.  Lot of potential but more than
I can handle with my tiny shop right now.

Starion or conquest? Rare-ish but I'm sure you could find a reasonable condition conquest for under three grand.

This.

Or pretty much any car that you could drop a junkyard 5.3 in and have some fun.

even 944's and 924's are cheap, but u don't want euro.  914's are cool too if u can find one that isn't rusted into 2 pieces haha.

I sell P-car crap for a living, I might barf if I have to deal with one on my off hours.   :)

If there was a regular drivetrain in the early VW 924 I'd have one though.
And put a diesel in it.

Unfortunately I managed to crack a molar, so I'll be buying the dentist a car instead of me for
right now I guess.  Sigh.  I appreciate the suggestions though guys.

Teeth, can't live without 'em, at least not on the coasts.

My other thought when you get back to your quest is a pre-smog dodge colt, the captive import mitsubishi lancers are about the only classic rwd japanese cars you can get in that price range.

It's probly for the best that I ponder it awhile longer.

I really do dig the idea of a vette or such, it's been a long time since I had a plain old v8 RWD, but the last vaguely
sporty car I had, an E30, it just attracted so much attention.  It was pretty much stock and I couldn't go anywhere
without some asshat wanting to race and being a jerk in general.  This was back east and folks around here are a lot
more mellow, but it was one of the reasons I ditched that car.

im always down for a race even if i know my car is much slower, the guys in diesels trucks always seem to want to race haha.  All in good fun of course.  Right now i'm prowling around on my scooter looking for a honda ruckus to race.  they're cool little scooters but so over priced, i just wanna see how my 500 dollar honda aero compares to the most over priced scooter available haha.

I raced a dumptruck once in my 81.  Beat him, barely, but he was loaded.

The un-governed school bus was my nemesis though.

New amendment-requirement: Not ***ing unibody.

Possible exception for the vette, since it's mostly plastic and seems not rust prone.

I know you said no "euro" but I've always enjoyed the Merkur XR4ti.   RWD, manual, turbo 2.3 litre, handles well and doesn't look like everything else on the road.   Problem is around here a decent one is hard to find without going over the 3 grand mark by a bit.

Neat cars, had a buddy with a really quick one years ago.  I don't imagine parts availability or cost has gotten any better though.

Inline???
Did an Astre wagon with a 3.8l odd fire buick V6/5 speed back in the day, lots of fun. I remember a hot road magazine article about dropping a rabbit engine in one, so a diesel is a possibility, the parts are out there.

Given the patience, I can put a diesel in anything RWD within reason that CA will let me.  Or I can register it out of state.
That was my original thought, the best part of my Caddy is probobly the motor and stuff hung on it.  I'm really sick of the chassis,
but OK with the motor.

AAZ Volvo 240?  I know the cars well, have had half a dozen of em.

Volvo 740 2.4TD? Just like the 1.6TD we all love, but with 2 more sylinders:-)  pulls like a train. Drove a 2.8ton LT50 towing 2.3ton  Vivaro with this type engine, would do 100-120 kph (which was top speed) easily.  Will do burnouts at idle:-)

So, Acme has a trans adapter for 22R based 4runner swaps using manual trans, wonder if any Toyota trans that bolt to a 22R, and should work with
the Acme kit, will fut a 240(shifter in right place.

The only TDI 240 I've seen had the motor setting way back in the bay.

really the only full frame car i think i'd mess with would be 70s-80s g body cars, montecarlo, cutlass, regal, and pontiac grand prix.

The G-bodies are cool but there's not too many left. I had an '83 Cutlass back in the day... 305, black, 2-door, T-tops... I was 19. It lasted 9 months before I broke it. They don't like getting airborne.

They tended to rot out their frames around the rear axle. You see them around with the rear bumper strapped on all the time, that's because the frame broke and there's nothing holding it up any more.

G-bodies are plentiful in my area, and I want one... I helped a buddy drop a 5.3 in one last year... but I'm trying to figure out why it's the ONLY full frame car you'd play with.

my dad had an 87 monte carlo ss with t-tops, i learned to drive in it.  but they are very rusty cars, rear quarters and fender wells, and any part of the frame seems to rust lots and lots.

I see lots with crushed velvet interiors and tiny wire spoke wheels out here.

Back east it was what the hot redneck girl in schools dad drove when they hadn't quite managed the F or Fox body. :)

Then there was the occasional turbo that left everyone going "wtf just happened" when it was faster than, well, everything
that didn't have wrinkle wall slicks.

I have had a Mk8. Good car till one of the 900 dollar air bag suspension starts leaking. My 85 Mercedes 300D is a way better car.

My daily driver is my 86 TD vw and my wifes is our 85 MB. We are retired Probably upgrades are going to be slow.

I don't know that I can stand the interior on a lot of domestic stuff from the 80's and 90's, like the Lincolns, after having Mercedes and such most of my life.
The 8 especially, neat car, but just goofy cheap looking inside.
