None of your pics work.  Pictures that are hosted on TDIClub cannot be posted elsewhere.

In order to have a tach on my Mk1, I modified a Mk1 gasser tach in order to run off the w-terminal and added that to my Mk1 cluster.

Libby I should work with you on the exact conversion.  I have replaced capacitors, resistors and added wire links as described in a write up I believe done here or maybe elsewhere but I still can't seem to make it work.

One of those rainy day projects I can never seem to find on the workbench when it is indeed a rainy day.

Like today.  I ended up converting a lamp that didn't seem to have a good ballast anymore and a replacement is NLA.  So I just put a regular socket in place of the four pin one and screwed in an LED bulb.

It has been a few years since I did that to my Rabbit so the details are foggy.  If memory serves I largely followed this page although I believe the tach circuits were not exactly the same:

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/f28/how-tachofy-your-mk-1-diesel-31515.html

I cross-referenced the circuits in this FAQ thread:

I'm afraid I don't recall better specifics than that.

Libby, I was following those directions.  Some confusion between diagrams and writeups but working on removing variables.  I may get it yet.  Hate to have a tach on the workbench when it does a better job in the dash cluster.

Thanks.

  When I built mine
I let the adjustable potentiometer hang outside the cluster.
Got it off the circuit board and  ran some long skinny wires to it.
 Otherwise it's hard to adjust.

For the one on my '91 MK2 I drilled a hole through the front of the cluster.

With the tach in hand, I jumper wires to the battery and then to the Alternator and adjust as the engine is running and watch the Tiny Tach for guidance.
