I built this car by combining a 1997 1Z B4 and a 1992 syncro B3 (246K Km).
Engine:
- Freshly built AFN TDI engine
- running as a 1Z with the wastgated GT15
- AFN IP, exhaust manifold, injectors, and oil feed line not included, but available for VNT swap
- Bosio PP520 injectors
- Malone stage 2 tune w/ dynamic EGR
- Custom stainless 2.5" straight pipe exhaust (I will be installing a muffler soon)
- new vacuum pump
- new water pump
- intake mani cleaned out
Trans / Drivetrain:
- CTN geared O2C
- freshly built with new seals
- ACT VR6 clutch kit
- ARP ring gear bolts
- new CV's and boots installed where required
- Good propshaft bearings
- New front prop shaft coupling
Suspension / Brakes / Steering:
- 1997 VR6 B4 ABS conversion
- Brakes in good condition
- new upper strut bearings
- new Bilstein HD struts in all 4 corners
- ZF Steering rack w/ new arms
- new power steering pump
- new ball joints
- R32 control arm bushings
- new Falken 205/50/15 tires
Body / Interior
- Hella DE's w/ eurowires relay harness
- wired for OEM fogs
- glass moon roof
- new hatch struts
- OEM B3 roof bars
- OEM keyless entry
- wired for heated seats (Seats are not heated. A grey pair of seats that are heated included)
- I converted the entire HVAC system to the B4 R134 system, right down to the heater controls. AC system is not charged, but tested and leak free.
- everything electrical works as it should
- body is more or less rust free
- paint is in good condition but hood seems to be a little faded
- front mask is broken below left headlight (may be replaced soon)
- a couple of small dings and such all around, but otherwise pretty good for a 20 year old car
Odometer reads 337K Km. Cluster is from a different car.
Roof basket not included.
$7500 obo

NICE! Excellent price too. If I had more money than cars right now and could import it without raising my blood pressure I'd buy it.
-
i think vwsnaps needs too buy/import it.. so in a year or so when bored libby can buy it from him..:D
he is initerested in syncro ,tdi and b3 wagon..you need to pm him..
-
Awesome. Build. I don't see it feasbe To get it to Nebraska legally and affordabley ( is that a word )
-
but has anyone tried with a tdi conversion?
i can see the issue with g60 as its epa crap silly here.. but a properly converted tdi swap.. wagon same body.. as us version.. seatbelts are of the issue... rest should not be...
honestly you want to look into it..
why seatbelts... usa had passive/auto as no air bags... usa requirement.. one or other.. b4 got bags... so motorized till then :(
so id try to tell them its a 96 or 97 passat b4 wagon doner.. and should be considered a b4 passat as such... if the look at body dementions.. glass fitment so on the should see it same body too...
-
id be better off buying that local synco wagon and converting that one ( even though it rusty ) After shipping cost / sorting out getting it titled in Nebraska ( which is a task sometimes for even out of state cars ) id probably be $9k deep into this....
awesome car - good luck with sale. If you are road tripping to nebraska anytime soon , let me know.. :)
-
Yeah, I looked into it a little bit as well. I did have the title for the car altered to diesel. But the VIN would still decode as a gasser. Seatbelts can always be converted. I could even install airbags into it. They'll work too.
-
yea.. but the way the epa does things here.. it may be a valid to do car.. aaz no as we lacked them... but true tdi.. epa covered... to state convereted from b4 tdi wagon may get the crash test issues resolved.. glass same... wheel base so on.. a slippery of the crack... imo major grey area..
so it may be a true valid possible for the guy with coin... imo hell of a deal.. priced right.. dream of car that if you want one i could not build it for your price... imo worth looking into with my 2 thoughts for a us buyer..
-
Crs did you say the issue with seatbelts was either passive seatbelts and knee bars or airbags was the law and VW opted for passive seatbelts and knee bars?
-
Like I said, if its a matter of installing parts. A potential buyer could send me the parts and I will install them. I would want a non-refundable deposit.
I will not do the work with US customs and EPA. You want the car, you figure that out.
-
Yes, that was the deal. Starting in 1988 (I think) the U.S. required either passive restraint seatbelts OR driver airbags. VW went with the cheaper option until a driver airbag became mandatory on passenger cars in 1993, rendering the idiot-proof seat belts unnecessary and passenger side airbags became mandatory in 1998.

I don't understand why this hasn't sold.

I don't understand why this hasn't sold.
Because its in Canada... ?
:)
-
<-----------poor else id do it..
i would go as far as trying to use ohio's silly screw up to do this... if the epa crap no fly that i suggest looking into in depth.. before last ditch effort of body swap the rain tray..
-
Importers are using a loophole in the law to sneak in cars that the U.S. government deems unsafe for American roads. Under the law, cars 25 years or older can be brought to the U.S. without adhering to current safety and emission standards. The Defender doesn't even have airbags.
4 more years and the value increases drastically...

I've got this too:

I literally baffled as to why this car hasn't sold. I want it but just don't think it doable without a massive pile of spare change.
-
hell this came up in conversation the night before he bumped it... i figured it gone. guess i need to tell guy now...
i still think adding in "functional via plug in" air bag system... aka bag installed in a tempo method for scanning purpose and going by 96 epa/crash will do it . he just blew 2k on his 96 b4... he wants tdi 4x4 passat .
-
The other issue is that it's on the island. Good for the car (hasn't spent its life sitting in traffic, plenty of highway driving, Pacific Northwest so not much salt, etc), bad for selling it. Ya need to take a ferry / floatplane / whatever to go see it.
Very nice looking car. All my $$$$ is going to Jezebel right now but looking at that I can't help but wonder if I've made the right choice!! (Sssh, don't let her know!)

I say you put all your energy into this thing Put the TDI swap in your mark 3 and get your money back

I might be interested. Actually I am interested. No sense being coy. ;D I am in the Fraser Valley and could travel over if things look promising. PM me and I'll give you my number so we can talk turkeys. I will check the board for a reply every day at 6am.
Cheers!

I'll set things up with a couple questions: Does it have locking diffs? Is there any manual control of the system like the T3 Transporter? Do you have a line on Syncro parts near-by? I'll stay tuned for your reply.
-
No locking diffs in Syncro Passats. If you look up the sellers name, I think you will see that he has/had several Syncros so chances are good he's either got or knows where to get parts.
-
Copy that, thanks. I will remain hopeful that he has a few parts sources, assuming he hasn't already sold it. I have been on a steep learning curve since seeing his add here yesterday, researching the Syncro system. Amazingly simple 4wd set-up. It's just parts that appear to be hard to come by. I have been looking for a Jetta tdi wagon but the B3 Passat actually looks kinda nice. Reminds me of the type 4 which is one of my all time faves. It doesn't hurt that the car would be ideal for my commute which is paved/dirt/moonscape at times!
-
Open diff up front. Angle drive for rear is driven off of the diff carrier. The pass side axle is driven as normal, just through the angle drive. A viscous coupling is in front of the rear diff. So the power is never 100% front or back. Rear diff only locks in reverse. A forward gear and clutch out unlocks it. The ABS does the traction control by braking the loose wheel, transferring the power through the diff to the wheel that has traction.
-
"Rear diff only locks in reverse"
Good enough to get out of trouble. I PM'd you my email/phone number but if you like I can call you. Just zip me the number.
-
Figured I'd include this for those curious about Syncro: http://www.awdwiki.com/en/volkswagen/#Golf_Mk2_Syncro__Passat_B3__B4__Sharan_Syncro__1996_2001_
Looks like a nice, simple set-up. There is a lot of info out there from many folks that could safely be called Syncro junkies, but you may have to learn German.
And BDR, I would appreciate if you could email me a bunch more pics, and I have a bunch of questions that I will email you once we establish contact. The ferry is pricey so I want to deal with as much as possible before crossing the pond.
-
I'm not quite sure why I can't seem to make contact with you, but if you decide you want to sell the car I am still interested.
-
Just in case anyone else wants to check out this fine car, I think it is still available. I backed out and bought a project car instead.
-
Bump for new engine and suspension
-
UGH! I need this. ;D
-
ja, me too...
what about bringing it over and sitting on it for a few years before registration?
