Title: Clutch replacement - New hardware ?

I am replacing the clutch on my 81 rabbit 1.6l w/4 speed trans. Been crusing the post and have read that the bolts should be replaced because they are "stretch" bolts. My Bentley has no reference to replacing the hardware but instead indictates using Loctite 270 on the pressure plate to crank bolts. The Bentley has recommended bolt relacement on other jobs for this car. Did the stretch bolts come on in later year models ?
Also need to replace the clutch push rod as it is worn. Only finding rods for 5 speed trans. Anyone know a source ?

most of the time a little wear on the throw out rod is no big deal. only time it even moves is when you push the clutch in. all other times, its moving the same speed as everything else. and the source for 4 speed rods: out of used 4 speed trannies, or a VW tranny shop with old 4 speed parts laying around..

ive never replaced the bolts that hold the fly wheel to the pressure plate. usually stretch bolts have a torque value (xx ft lbs) followed by an additional 1/4 or 1/2 turn.

depending on the bentley manual it will have the TTY spec or just straight torque.

I don't know if the TTY bolts only came on newer cars or not, but as much as the little buggers cost, I have always just bought new TTY bolts and installed them as such.

Thanks guys. The Bentley I have just has a straight torque value, so . .  standard fastner and Loctite it is. A bit concerned about using Loctite 270 (the red stuff). I was a tool and die maker in a previous life (before this country decided that manufacturing was no longer important) and was trained by my mentor to never us the red Loctite on anything that you would need to take apart later.

As for the clutch push rod. I am looking to replace because there is a flat approx. 1/8" across what is supposed to be a full spherical radius. To the wrecking yard it is and hope to find one in better shape than mine.

You could contact Brokevw. He has a cryogenically treated one left for 40 bucks. It is OEM then he sends it to the treatment deal. I bought one for mine.

There should be a place for messaging :D Sometimes 40 dollars is cheaper than the 10 dollar one at the JY when you spend 5 hours looking and pulling. Plus this is a good one for wear resistance.

I never replace the bolts that hold the flywheel to the pressure plate unless they are damaged. I know that I should replace the ones that hold the pressure plate to the crank but often I just re-use them because I am lazy.

Check to see that the rod was not installed backwards. I think one end is flat and one is spherical.

Yeah, I think the flatter end goes toward the throwout bearing and the rounder end toward the clutch.  Do I have that right?  Anyway, what you have may be correct...
