Title: AHU air conditioning in mk1 chassis
Post by: 1life2live on June 18, 2012, 10:58:10 pm
Planning on doing a tdi swap into my mk1 and would like to retain the ac. I have read that the compressor will hit the core support with the new motor. Just curious if anyone has made it work and what it took. Also besides making the compressor fit what will i need to hook it into the 84 jetta ac lines?

Great thanks. Notching should not be a problem. You have any links to the pictures you speak of?

it was on poortex... mk1 rabbit/jetta discussion area.. good 18mo ago.. thinking one was a caddy build.. the other was rabbit/jetta and that one they used a curved piece to box it in.. but no no links... i saw them way before i put my tdi into the kubvan.. when the plans were my 84 coupe..

the guy i think id talk too is the daily fun tdi mk1 jetta that he bucheed with the  wrong offset porsche phone dials... he changed th firewall for the later heaterbox.. kept the ac and such.. but i do not know how he modded the coresupport..

How did you solve your lower radiator hose fitment issue?

Did you get a different radiator?  Please share the radiator size or vehicle it was made for.

I am in the midst of doing my own AAZ into MK1 rabbit and made the notch in the metal for the AC compressor and then I went to fit the radiator and more issues.

Thanks!

Is there any space in front of the A/C condenser to mount an air to water intercooler radiator?

I don't believe there is. I don't know for sure on the MK1 but I know with a/c and the MK2 there isn't. Here is a whoretex thread that started talking about valves and on page 2 is turning into a really good IC discussion

http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5672840-Diesel-valves/page2

There is a link to the MK1 section of the shorty valve cover thread that is pretty good. I think it is based off of the car CRSMP5 has been talking about everytime this comes up called the yellow zonker

I skimmed the link but it look like all the discussion was on air to air intercoolers which are considerably thicker than the radiators available for air to water systems.  On my rabbit I will install A/C and air to water charge cooler, one way or another.   8)

yes, my bad I should have explained better. If you would take this idea you could build an air to water IC under hood in conjunction with the intake.

Yeah, for quite some time I've been planning to build an air water intercooler combined with a n/a intake manifold for a dual plenum air to water intercooler/intake.  I was just curious if the intercooler's radiator would fit in front of the A/C compressor.  My car doesn't currently have A/C and so I can't readily measure.  I was thinking that a complete A/C system from a mk3 might not be too hard to come by for a retrofit.

more good info here. This was another problem i have been researching so i had an idea of what to do before i tore into my swap. I thought about running an intercooler down low laying flat with a scoop to funnel air like the one in the link that was pictured. I have a fmic thats for a mk4 1.8t that would fit if i didnt run ac so im thinking ill give that back to the guy i got it from and see if he can make a custom one for me. Does anyone have anymore info on the drawing in the link about the intercooler that was layed flat under the car?
