Title: what transmission do I have

trying to figure out what trans I have , came out of a 1996 Jetta AAZ engine , there is no release bearing , there is a rod that pushes out of the input shaft ? I want to upgrade the clutch ,flywheel, but cannot find any info ?

Stamped on the bottom of the transmission housing, right up next to the engine will be a letter and number combination.  When you find that go here:  And you will have all the gear information you need along with some links.   I think that is your next step.

The numbers are the date of build in a strange German way of doing dates.

The AAZ in the Jetta came with an 020 trans, I can't remember the actual code though. It's different from the 02A found on TDI and VR6 cars.
