Due to the death of the GTD, I am now the owner of A SEAT Leon TDi, (a spanish made MK4 Golfish thing) which has the 110hp ASV TDi engine. This was the start of a year long battle of the bubbles.
Lots of massive 2 inch long air bubbles scooting along the intake line, from filter to pump.
new fuel lines.................................................................................bubbles.
new mann filter...............................................................................bubbles.
new genuine bosch tempvalve and "o" rings..................................bubbles.
Sulk a bit.........................................................................................bubbles.
Check fuel tank pick up, clean as whistle........................................bubbles.
Smear gobs of blue hylomar around all fuel line joints....................bubbles.
Smear gob of hylomar about the swage on the mann filter............bubbles.
Check fuel tank breather................................................................bubbles.
Sulk a bit more, this battle has been going on for about a year
Genuine SEAT temp valve (Bosch) on Ebay for £5, buy & fit, not expecting much......................result?
NO MORE WRETCHED BUBBLES and an extra 6 mpg. ;D
So don't assume that that new genuine bosch thermo valve is good out of the box.

Swap in a filter without the temp valve! Some Beetle applications came with a TDI without the preheater valve. There's a part number for an '80s Golf filter that doesn't have it either. Then you simply connect the two lines that previously went to the valve together, no more bubbles EVER.

vanbcguy........I did that with the old mk2 golf GTD, and is sound advice that works well, carefull if one is ordering blind as some mk1 golf filters had the oil filter type end that screwed onto a boss flangey thing on the engine bay , you want the one with the two 8mm bent pipes.

BUT...............................................................the f*****g bubbles came back. ::)
One thing I did try was "the andy pandy mod" have a look through the link http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=205619 (http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=205619) and have a ponder. Basically you remove the fuel sender/pickup from the tank, look at it in awe and wonder as to why it has to be so bloody complicated, meanwhile it will dribble diesel all over the place. Drill a 5mm bit in the outlet pipe and fish out the bits and pieces and spring, use stiff silicone grease (not caulk!!) on the pipe connections and hopefully that is the end of it. 8)
Yet another hidden source of air is the "o"ring in the fuel pickup assembly, this would be a bugger to find, and would only give problems with, at a guess quarter full or less tank. Stiff silicone grease would help too.
Finally, bubbles begone, for now.
