Title: TDI Swap Questions and possible donor
Post by: Rising on April 22, 2014, 07:46:05 am
How hard is the TDI swap into the mk1? A guy I know is selling a wrecked 2000 golf TDI for $1000 and its kind of tempting me to try and part it out and keep all the engine goodies.

A. Do you think that's worth it? How much could I make back off of a mk4 shell?

B. How hard is the TDI swap? Ive wanted to build up this 1.6 idi to a decent fun daily... But having a TDI in it would definitely transform the car to something pretty awesome. What all is involved in the swap? Do they fit well or is it tight? What kind of fab work is involved besides the standard piping issues?

Thanks for feeding my curiosity. Also if I decide against the car I'd be happy to let anyone here have the info if they want it.

MK4+ engines require custom motor mounts. If you can't weld I'd be hesitant. You can get Mk3/B4s for around the same price in a similar condition.

Still not easy in a Mk1 but certainly not overly hard. If you go mTDi then it's easy...

Yeah I was worried about the mounts. So even through mk3 the mounts are all the same? So that would be 1z/ahu right?

Probably won't look for one unless something falls in my lap or something happens to this engine. But I'd definitely do an mtdi. The one wire engine is half the reason I wanted a rabbit ;)

Anybody here interested in a cheap mk4 donor?

All the MK1 mounts for the engine bolt up to the MK3 engine. The transmission is a whole different bag though. Search for 02A into Mk1 or 020 behind a TDI to get an idea of what you are looking at.
