Title: Recommend breakin oil
Post by: Rat407 on May 25, 2004, 09:55:31 am
Getting ready to finish up my 1.6 rebuild. Just wanted a general idea of what everyone thinks on the type of oil to use for break in.  I was going to go with Rotella straight 30w oil, run that for about 300 miles and then change out the oil and filter and go back with 30w again for another 700 miles and then go with regular 15w-40 rotella for 2500 miles.

Does this sound like it will work? Want to make sure to keep the oil clean and get any and all breakin compounds and stuff out of the system. :)

when I changed my rod bearings this last weekend I noticed that one of the pistons was much "looser" in the cylinder - this one slid down in the cylinder very easily, whereas the other three stayed in place and had to be manually pulled down.

does this indicate anything?

How about the method of break in? Aviation piston engines' warranty is voided if you don't follow their guidelines: Install engine, run and check for leaks. Expidite to runway and take off at full power,  initiate best rate of climb and hold for (something like) 15 mins. Land, change oil. Engine broken in.
Compare that to new cars, like my gf's new mini. 2500 kms under 4500 rpm and 115 km/h!

Yeah...but airplane engines have 7-thou between the piston and the hole...and they break them in with caster-bean oil, too!
