Title: 02A Transmission Sealant
Post by: rodpaslow on March 21, 2013, 02:39:01 pm
I have all the bearings I want to replace in it, should be able to put my 02A back together, at least have the two cases together.  (all bearing preloads have been completed, so far so good)

What sealant should be used between the cases to seal it.  A buddy of mine says to use some loctite "aneroid" sealant.  I don't like that idea because it stays relatively soft.  Will just pain old silicone work as long as you don't over-do it?  I'm not using a gasket because I don't want to have to buy new shims, and I would have to do that if I used a gasket, as this transmission didn't have one originally.

buy the stuff they use for gluing mk4+ engines together... not silicone.. not antirobic stuff.. gm, subaru (best deal) both use it... gm 1/3rd the size for almost same price as subaru.. ive never priced what vw is..

buut please tell what you decide on..

p.s. id ask crazyandy as vw trained him for that job..

I used gasket sealant that was a bit thicker than the aneroid type
And only hardened slightly.  similar to the vw stuff only 12 dollars
For a half tube.  it was at canaidian tire.

Was it blue Hylomar?

The stuff originally developed for RollsRoyce aircraft engines.

Interesting. I have a leak at shifter tower cap on the bottom of my trans when I put in the 02j tower no gasket was present?

Yeah, mine didn't have any sealant their or on the top side either.  However, when I put the shift tower and that bottom VW sign at the bottom, I added a bit of sealant just to make sure it didn't leak.

I've finally got everything, I was waiting for the input shaft seal.  I finished my 02A last night, now I just have to wait for some decent weather/shovel my MK2 out (to drive it) while I install this in my MK3 golf.  I have an 02j tower, so I'm going to use a dieselgeek unit attached to the tower and a MK4 shifter & cables.  Should be interesting once its all done...

I thought the best method for putting vw transmissions together was dry?

Might ask the old Porsche guys what they use.

The 02A I took apart had sealant, as there was a bit left on the inside after pulling it apart.  I work at a machine shop that's rebuilt many things and most things have a much finer finish than the machining left on the 02A tranny I had.  I was not going to put it back together unless I new it was properly sealed.  In my opinion it's insurance it will not leak.

I have the transmission in the car - I thought I'd note if ur thinking of using the cable system on a MK3 golf, the CRX (honda) cable will not work as it's not long enough.  The distance from the pedal to the firewall is longer than M1 or 2.  It's sorter by about 6" or so. (02A trans)

I'm going to try and buy 3/16 plastic coated cable and see if it fits the outer sheath of this cable and just re-use the ends and swage them onto the length I need.  JUST FYI.

I have a MK4 shifter in the car now- fits quite nicely.  Will have pics in a few days.

I must add, and I cannot stress this enough - with a MK3 platform (golf) the crx cable will not work.  I made a made-up inside, actual cable and it broke after about a month.

The easiest in a MK3 platform is to use the hydraulic system.  The original clutch pedal has both the cable and cut-out for the master cylinder clip is using 02A tranny.  And, you can used either the MK3 or MK4 system, master-slave and connecting line.  The mk4 master needs a bit of a spacer made and use slightly longer bolts (about 3/16 to 1/4 spacer), because the master has a bit longer push pin, so it can be mounted on the outside of the firewall just like the Mk3 master.  I got all this from a wrecker for $25.00 and it's much easier to install and bleed, than it is trying to add a cable to MK3 with an 02A transmission!!!

As for the shifter there's lots of info on many sights - that's the easy part.
