Title: 1.6 Non Turbo to Turbo swap
Post by: KyMoonshine on June 29, 2016, 04:59:44 am
Hello, I looked around and could not really find an answer so I thought I would ask, I have been collecting extra parts here and there for my 85 Golf 1.6D non turbo car, I was wondering if the motor and trans from a 92 Eco 1.6 Turbo Jetta would swap into my car? both are five speed cars, if so is there a lot of modification to be done? I know anything can be made to fit anything, I was just wondering if it is a direct drop in situation? Thank you for any info or advice, this forum has been most helpful so far

Motor and trans will drop right in. Biggest issue you will have is bolting up the exhaust. The turbo exhaust down-pipe is a bit different

Thank you, I figured I would have to do some exhaust work, is there much difference in driveability/power between the two? and is the 92 geared the same? my Golf does not like freeway speeds lol

The Eco cars usually came with a transmission that isn't set up well for interstate cruising at the 70+ mph speed limits we have today. They were definitely dialed in for 55 mph max. Great around town, not do good on the freeway.
