I finally had a mostly successful long trip under my belt, though when about 6 miles from, the IP started pouring out fuel, 1/4 tank in 6 miles.
Anyway, I checked mileage on 3 legs of my trip from Denver to Moab, and 150 miles of offroad during a 4 day camping trip. I figure those doing M-TDI conversions in their Suzuki's, Toyotas or whatever will know they can't get much worse mileage than this, with my 3500 lb brick. From Denver to Fruita I drove 221 miles, and got 30.8 mpg. Fruita to Moab, 90.4 miles, I got 32 mpg. 150 miles of all offroad plus about 62 back to Moab on highway I got 21.8 mpg. Low end torque seemed better than the IDI and I never felt at a loss for power.

Good report Jim. That mileage isn't anything to be ashamed of at all.

I'm not ashamed of my mileage, just was trying to point out nothing could be less aerodynamic than my truck, so others mileage should be at least what mine is if not better. Guess I didn't word it quite right.
Most of the trucks were stock, so no super hard stuff, especially 150 miles of super hard stuff. The harder parts are actually mostly on video, but it's hard to take pics/vid while driving through stuff where you should have both hands on the wheel.. Looks like the nut? came off the shaft for the idle, allowing the o-ring to pop out.

Very nice...and not bad mpg at all for the brick. Ah...moab...need to get out there to do some mtb'n in the near future...
I keep trying to convince my brother to convert his 02 Wrangler to diesel...we'll see now as 31's and a 4 banger gasser on it just don't line up well. Though...he holds his own in the rock climbing!

Sorry to threadjack, but how much hassle was it to adapt to your Landy? Petrol (Gas!) $8.47/USgallon . 1958 series 2 Landrover. 20 mpg, if I am lucky. :roll:

Well, I had to design the adapter myself and have it made. Plumbing exhaust on the first version, AAZ with k-14, was a bit of a pain, though on the new turbo, the footwell had to be cut a little, and it is still tight. It was a fair bit of work, a ton more than you'd need for a 200TDI or 300TDI. All the work is here (http://www.66rover.com/mods/mods.html).

hey jimfoo i've been looking into oil bath air filters recently and i thought of you when thinking back to the extreme wear in your engine. not exactly performance, but it will remove virtually all dirt from the air. especially useful for your offroad excursions :D

How fast were you cruising? And how many RPMs?

Best oil bath oilfilters come off 1980's mercedeses... should be easily sourced

How fast were you cruising? And how many RPMs?
On the flat parts, around 65ish, 2800 rpm, slow following the stock vehicles up the passes, which were only on the first section, 30-35 mph.

I took an oilbath off. Thats part of the reason for the wear, the air hose had to climb the side of the battery and was eaten by the acid, allowing LOTS of dust in. Plus I worried about the oil should I roll. Don't need an easy route to a runaway engine.

Say Jimfoo, did you do any painting of coating of the exhaust fitting you made for your turbo ? I am faborication mine now for my Diesel Caravan project and would not want to remake them in only a few years from Rust.
I bought some 1200 degree black paint I was thinking of using. I have 304 stainless steel for the manifold to turbo adaptor but the rest is steel.

No I didn't. The flange is 1/4" though so shouldn't rust for a long time. The pipe is stainless for a ways, then aluminumized the rest of the way. Though it wouldn't hurt to paint it, I'm sure it gets beyond 1200 at times. Maybe you could get it ceramic coated?

I took back the 1200 degree paint to China-Mart and when to Meijer's and got some spray on 1200 - 2000 degree ceramic coating. The brackets holding my S.S. tubing are steel so they will rust quickely at that heat. This should help :-0

I'm looking at getting a '68 109 station wagon, and putting some sort of turbo diesel in it.... not sure if a 1.9 would be enough for that larger truck though. It originally came wiht a 6 cylinder gasser, and is currently set up for the 3.9 V8 gas -- that's gotta go... :)
